Um dos (poucos) momentos culturais da viagem de férias a Tenerife foi a visita ao TEA - Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, em Santa Cruz.
A visita vale bem a pena, não só pelo conteúdo do espaço expositivo, mas também (ou sobretudo) pelo edifício em si. O projecto é dos arquitectos Herzog & de Meuron, em colaboração com Virgilio Gutiérrez e foi inaugurado em 2008.
O edifício joga habilmente com um diálogo entre volumes que se recortam e intersectam criando os espaços convergentes das entradas e uma espécie de pátio interior a partir do qual se adivinham os diferentes espaços que compõem o TEA como a biblioteca, a cafetaria, a loja ou as salas expositivas. A crueza do betão faz sobressair os momentos excepcionais: a luz natural, os curiosos elementos que distribuem a iluminação artificial, o verde do jardim interior, a escadaria de distribuição em espiral, a fluidez das rampas e dos percursos.
A expressividade da fachada é conseguida através de pequenas aberturas envidraçadas de diferentes tamanhos que lhe conferem dinamismo e remetem para um dos elementos de referência das Canárias: o mar. Esta composição aparentemente aleatória foi obtida através da transposição sobre a fachada em betão dos pixeis ampliados de uma fotografia do reflexo do sol sobre as águas do mar, o que se traduz num sistema de iluminação natural de características únicas.
Os arquitectos conseguem assim criar um edifício que se destaca da malha urbana, mas que se enquadra perfeitamente na envolvente, através da adopção de uma atitude de humanização do artificial.

One of the (few) cultural moments of our vacation trip to Tenerife was the visit to TEA - Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, in Santa Cruz.
The visit is well worthwhile, not only for the content of the exhibition space, but also (or mainly) by the building itself. The project, signed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, in collaboration with Virgilio Gutierrez, was inaugurated in 2008.
The building skillfully plays a dialogue between volumes that are cut and intersected creating spaces that converge to create the entrances and a kind of courtyard from where you can guess the different spaces that compose the TEA as the library, the cafeteria, the shop or the exhibition rooms. The harshness of the concrete brings out the exceptional elements: the natural light, the curious elements that distribute the artificial lighting, the green of the interior garden, the spiral distribution staircase, the fluidity of ramps and paths.
The expressivity of the facade is achieved through small glazed apertures with different sizes that add vibrancy and evoke one of the references of the Canary Islands: the sea. This seemingly random composition was obtained through the superposition over the concrete facade of the pixels of an enlarged photograph of the reflection of sunlight on the sea water, which results in a natural lighting system of unique features.
Architects were able to create a building that stands out from the urban tissue, but that fits perfectly into the environment by adopting an attitude of humanization of the artificial.
