Uma das novas obras de arquitectura que visitei durante a minha viagem a Madrid foi o edifício Caixa Forum, da autoria dos arquitectos Herzog & De Meuron. Não é a primeira vez que falo deste atelier suíço, fundado em 1978, que tem tido grande destaque recentemente por obras que não é raro traduzirem-se em prémios.
A Caixa Forum Madrid foi inaugurada em 2008 enquanto centro cultural e social da Fundação espanhola La Caixa. Surge em pleno Paseo del Prado, o eixo fundamental do coração de Madrid, onde a oferta cultural da cidade está concentrada, para se juntar a nomes como Prado, Reina Sofia ou Thyssen-Bornemisza.
O edifício espanta à passagem, mas entrar é fundamental. As exposições temporárias são um bom pretexto, mas o maior incentivo é o próprio edifício. Na pequena praça que o antecede adivinha-se a excelência de quem o projectou - desde o jardim vertical que cobre a empena do edifício próximo, até ao acesso surpreendentemente suspenso e ao remate superior do volume, que se relaciona com o edifício pré-existente pela cor e com ele contrasta pela modernidade do material escolhido - o aço corten.
O centro Caixa Forum está instalado numa antiga central eléctrica construída em inícios do século XX e olhando para algumas fotografias da situação anterior ao projecto o que mais admira é a capacidade dos projectistas de terem uma visão fantástica do volume em que aquele inofensivo edifício industrial de características modernistas poderia vir a tornar-se. A fachada é, portanto, mantida, mas sofre uma visível revolução: os 2000m2 passam a 10000m2, a maioria das janelas é encerrada com panos de tijolo, lembrando o abandono de um edifício desocupado, a base granítica é eliminada permitindo criar uma praça coberta que convida o visitante a entrar no edifício e o suspende, parecendo desafiar a lei da gravidade. O edifício existente é esculpido através de operações de subtracção e adição para dar origem a um volume híbrido entre a reutilização do passado e a expressividade do presente - que mais parece do futuro.
Uma estação de gás foi demolida para dar lugar a uma pequena praça que serve de área de acolhimento e recepção, num gesto que mais uma vez demonstra a capacidade dos arquitectos de distinguir o essencial do acessório e, por isso mesmo, desnecessário. No subsolo desenvolve-se um auditório e salas multiusos enquanto os pisos superiores albergam a recepção, livraria e salas de exposição.
Depois de admirar a escadaria de acesso e de percorrer as exposições, não deixem ainda de subir ao último piso para visitar o espaço de bar/restaurante. Mesmo que não se sentem para uma refeição, aproveitem para admirar o efeito do revestimento em aço corten perfurado a partir do interior - é mágico.

One of the new works of architecture that I visited during my trip to Madrid was the Caixa Forum building, designed by architects Herzog & De Meuron. It's not the first time I speak of this Swiss office, founded in 1978, which has been highlighted in recent works that are commonly turned into awards.
Caixa Forum Madrid was inaugurated in 2008 as a cultural and social center by the Spanish Foundation La Caixa. It appears along Paseo del Prado, the main axis of the heart of Madrid, where the cultural offer is concentrated, to join names like Prado, Reina Sofia or Thyssen-Bornemisza.
The building is amazing to pass, but to enter is fundamental. The temporary exhibitions are a good excuse, but the biggest incentive is the building itself. In the small square in front you can already guess the excellence of the architects - from the vertical garden that covers the wall of the nearby building, to the surprisingly suspended access and the upper edge of the volume that relates to the pre-existing building in color and contrasts with it in the modernity of the chosen material - the weathering steel.
Caixa Forum is installed in a former power station built in the early twentieth century and looking at some photographs of the prior situation the most admiring fact is the ability of the architects to have a fantastic vision of the volume in which that harmless industrial building could eventually become. The facade is maintained, but suffers a visible revolution: the 2000m2 turn to 10000m2, the majority of the windows are closed with bricks, reminding the abandon of a vacant building, the granite base is eliminated allowing to create a covered plaza that invites visitors to enter into the suspended building and seems to defy gravity. The existing building is carved through addition and subtraction operations in order to create a hybrid between the reuse of the past and the expressivity of the present - which looks more like the future.
A gas station was demolished to make way for a small plaza that serves as reception area, a gesture which once again demonstrates the ability of architects to distinguish the essential from the incidental and therefore unnecessary. The lower level gives room to an auditorium and multipurpose rooms while the upper floors house the reception, library and exhibition halls.
After admiring the access staircase and go through the exhibitions, don't leave without climbing to the top floor to visit the bar/restaurant. Even if you don't seat for a meal, take the opportunity to admire the effect of the drilled weathering steel coating from the inside - it's magical.
