Tal como prometido, deixo-vos com algumas imagens de uma das duas peças que tive a oportunidade de realizar durante o Workshop de Iniciação à Joalharia, na Escola Contacto Directo, no Porto.
O primeiro contacto com as técnicas de joalharia veio confirmar o que já suspeitava: este é um complexo, longo e fascinante processo! Ficar a conhecer todas as fases pelas quais atravessa uma simples peça de joalharia e ser capaz de pô-las em prática é um desafio... desde a fundição até ao acabamento, esta peça passou pela laminagem, pelo recozimento, pela serra, pela solda, pela lima e pela lixa até finalmente se transformar num anel.
Durante o workshop realizei duas peças com a preciosa ajuda do professor. Uma delas foi este anel: inspirado no tema da espiral. Desenvolvi o design e dei-lhe forma optando por uma estrutura em prata e um recheio em resina - preta de um lado, branca do outro.
É uma peça atrevida e afirmativa, que assenta no dedo de modo original: em vez de o abraçar como um anel tradicional, desenvolve o segmento parcial de uma espiral em volta do dedo sem nunca fechar efectivamente. Acho que esse pormenor lhe dá um toque especial. O outro toque de originalidade será dado pelo contraste entre as cores de cada um dos lados do anel, que o tornam numa peça versátil e nada monótona.
Se por um lado a combinação de preto/branco se revela uma escolha segura e neutra, a forma arrojada do anel e o seu tamanho considerável garantem que esta peça nunca passará despercebida na minha mão... e aí poderei dizer: sim, foi feita por mim!
A joalharia é uma arte exigente a nível de tempo e de espaço: se por um lado cada peça demora muito mais do que um leigo possa imaginar a executar (ainda mais não tendo qualquer experiência, como era o meu caso!), por outro lado são necessárias uma série de ferramentas e um adequado espaço de trabalho, que permitam a execução de todos os passos com cuidado e rigor. Para ficarem com uma ideia, espreitem aqui, por exemplo.
Esta foi uma primeira abordagem a este admirável mundo novo e espero no futuro criar condições para o aprofundar mais. Enquanto tal não acontece podem continuar a acompanhar na loja as peças que tenho desenvolvido.

As promised, I leave you with some images of the first of two pieces that I had the opportunity to perform during the Jewelry Workshop at Contacto Directo School, in Porto.
The first contact with metalsmith jewelry techniques has confirmed what I already suspected: this is a complex, long and fascinating process! Getting to know all the phases a simple piece of jewelry goes through and be able to put them into practice is a challenge... since the fusion to the finishing, this piece went through diverse steps until finally becoming a ring.
During the workshop I created two pieces with the precious help of the teacher. One was this ring, inspired by the theme of the spiral. I developed the design and shaped it using a silver structure and a resin filling - black on one side, white on the other.
This is an expressive and assertive piece, which relies on the finger in an original way: instead of embrace it as a traditional ring, it develops the partial segment of a spiral around the finger and never really closes. I think this detail gives it a special touch. Another original touch is given by the contrast between the colors of each side of the ring which make it a versatile and nothing monotonous piece.
If on one hand the combination of black/white reveals a safe, neutral choice, the bold form of the ring and its considerable size ensures that this piece will never go unnoticed in my hand... and then I can say: yes, I made it!
The metalsmith jewelry is an demanding art concerning time and space: on one hand each piece takes much more time to be made than you may think (especially if you have no experience, as was my case!), and on the other hand it's necessary a series of tools and a suitable workspace, allowing the execution of every step with care and accuracy.
This was a first approach to this brave new world and I hope, in the future, to be able to create conditions for further deepening. Until this happens you can continue to have a look at the shop at the pieces I've been developping.
