Joana Pedroso | Trincar Uvas

Tell us...
1. who is Joana Pedroso?
I grew up in a little village in the coast of Portugal and 5 years ago I moved to the Netherlands where I've fallen in love. Somedays I work as a paper restorer and in others days I give room to my creativity. I am the happiest amongst nature, friends and art.

2. have you become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
Since I was a kid I've been always changing my mind on what I wanted to ''be''. I remember spending hours going through a list of degrees deciding what I wanted to study. I found out about a course that was called Conservation and Restoration and it sounded great - lots of manual work and it was connected to Art and History. But now, after spending 5 years studying it and 5 more years working, I've come to realize what I really want to ''be'' is an independent creative crafter/artist. I used to cringe at the idea of owning my own business - I only thought of the headaches and responsibilities, but now I can only smile at the idea of spending all of my time on my own work.

3. what inspires you to create?
There is this little bug inside of me that whispers new ideas from time to time. There is also this other bug that makes me want to do things with my hands. I don't know where they come from but I just do what they say!

Share with us...
4. your artistic media of choice.
I definitely have a strong connection with textiles - I love their texture, diversity and versatility and the warmth they give to any project.

5. the favorite corner of your workspace.
My workspace is a corner and i love all of it!

6. a day at work.
I don't really a have a routine. If I am feeling creative I'll spend a whole day (sometimes a week) making new pieces. On the days I am feeling patient I photograph new items, post them on Etsy, etc. Other days I might spend the whole day procrastinating behind my computer... it really depends on my mood!

7. a business tip.
I'm not so business savvy yet...

8. an advice to your younger you.
It's the one I still give to myself everyday: Don't worry!

9. a plan to the future.
Moving to the south and having a big garden.

Let us know…
10. a personality that influences you.
Anybody that stays true to himself.

Akatsuka Masami | cocon
Céret, Southern France

1. Let’s pretend we don’t know each other and I’ve never heard about Masami or cocon. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! I’m masami, a japanese who lives in France, mother of two children Kai and Moë.
I’m stylist, designer, creator, artist, inventor... as you want!

2. You went to fashion school in Tokyo and fine arts school in France, where you now live. How was this creative passion born and when did cocon began to take shape?
Since I was a little girl I was very passionate about art. maybe not “art” exactly at that time, but something that is born and that creates a bubble on the universe by hand anyway. I think that my world was already in it, but cocon began to take shape after my children were born, I had more confidence in myself.

3. Your creations with fabric are soft and delicate. Share with us the philosophy and concepts behind your work.
hmmm... philosophy and concept, for me it's the interpretation that can be given after my world is already present. My work is not born from that, it's very spontaneous.

4. You develop limited series of handcrafted products, from beautiful dolls to clothing and everyday accessories. Would you share your creative process with us?
Nothing simpler! Limited, because I make everything alone.
Ideas fall into my head, then idea is transformed into form, there's a selection of fabric and color,
Finally manufacturing...

5. Your wonderful characters are stylized, almost surreal! Would you consider they live among children’s imaginary or are destined to every child within us, adults?
Both. They come perhaps from children’s imaginary or even from the imaginary of adults who keep some good childhood memories - I kept in the brain and made it a mixture of child-adult.

6. I must say I love your jade plants and original mobiles! How about you: would you share a favorite and a best seller with us?
A best seller is kamomé (seagull) mobile for a while and my favorite is... all!

7. Your fashion background shows in your creations: you develop beautiful clothing collections, both to your dolls and children, as they are inspired by one another. Which one comes first? I’m curious about the upcoming collection! Can you give us a sneak peek?
Almost all starts with the ideas of clothing for children and then I adapt them to the clothing for the dolls.
Except the imaginary doll, I decide the clothing through each character.
The new collection of cocon clothing will be out late April or early May, I hope. I would love to make a boy doll clothing in this collection!

8. Through your shop your creations travel all around the world! What means do you use to promote your work?
Internet. If I waited here in this small town, nothing would ever happen. If I can work around the world, it's because humans have created this great tool!

9. Would you share with us a regular day at work?
I work on the days when children are at school from 9 am to 5 pm. Sometimes on the weekend.
I will soon have a work space, so I would really like to separate my work and private life.

10. Would you give us a glimpse of your working space? Describe it and tell us what you love most about it.
My little work space is on the corner of our living room next to the dining room. Lots of things move along the day. I try to have around the table things essential to free my mind, like pebbles, driftwood, leaves, seeds, shell, glands...
Now I’m very happy to soon have a work space just for me, just for cocon.

11. You take beautiful photographs, both from your creations and the world that surrounds you - I bet photography must be one of your other passions… Would you share your hobbies with us?
My passion for photography started when I was a student at fashion school, where I learned about the development.
More things I like... music, films, take a walk, DIY! Right now I don't have much free time.

12. You now live in the south of France, tell us what you enjoy most about it. Do you miss your roots?
Nature, it's the element I need. Here, we are lucky: we have the sea, mountains, river and lake without going too far. In fact, I left Paris to stay close to the Mediterranean Sea. I knew nobody, but no matter.
My father loves the sea, he took me there often. My need of the presence of the sea near me comes from my childhood, I think.
I miss my roots? Yes, sometimes when I’m weak and sad. But I don’t regret my choices.
Now, I'm struggling to create the roots here in France for my children.
Life is funny.

13. If you could live in any historical era of your choice, what would it be? Why?
Youth in the 60's to 80's - less individualism, incredible energy.
People were more flexible, I believe (watching my husband).

14. What advices would you give to someone who would also like to become an entrepreneur?
I don't know if it’s me who can give advice... we just must believe what we do.

15. What are your plans for the future? And your most unrealistic dreams?
Ah! Our dream is to go around the world sailing - and then my little work place in it!

Now a quick question and answer game so we can find a bit more about you and your tastes!
Tell us one:

book: illusion, Richard Bach
music: Ray lamontagne (his voice touches me deeply)
movie: Dead Man
personality/artist: my children, Kai and Moë are so creative and surprising
color: white

Studio Meez
Ghent, Belgium
site | blog | shop

1. Let’s pretend we don’t know each other and I’ve never heard about Studio Meez. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi everyone! I’m Studio Meez, a graphic designer, self taught illustrator and devoted knitter based in Ghent. I make illustrations and birth announcements, knit scarves, sew dresses and many many other things.

2. You work as an illustrator and graphic designer. How was this creative passion born and which path lead you here?
Just like many others I was born with a passion to be creative and as long as I can remember I always had my colour pencils with me. My parents send me to artschool after I ruined their wallpaper and since then my passion only grew. I followed graphics & illustration in secondary school and later on I was lucky to get accepted to study graphic design. A year after getting my bachelor in graphic design I decided to take the chance to start my own little online shop. Everything is still fresh and new to me and I’m curious to see where it will lead me!

3. What mediums do you use to create your original drawings and why do you prefer them? And how about digital mediums?
For the moment I’m in some kind of search stadium. I’m trying out a lot of techniques in search of what suits me the best. I always loved to work with watercolor and pencil. Lately I’m also doing some cut and stick work since sticking paper is so much fun and I can’t live without my computer so there is also a little bit of photoshop, indesign and illustrator. I like to be versatile in my techniques so that they could be a never ending source of inspiration.

4. In your illustrations you combine some characters from children imaginary and funny animals how are these compositions born? What inspires you? Share your creative process with us.
Most of my figures just pop up unexpectedly in my head and then I have to draw them. I also like to take long walks in the city and have a vivid imagination. During those walks I like to image tiny friends and funny creatures that walk along with me.

5. You take your illustrations to the next level, transferring them to wearable objects in wood and fabrics – I especially love your lovely wooden brooches! Would you share a favorite and a best seller with us?
Those wooden brooches are the favorite of many people. I think it is sometimes more fun to have an illustration you love with you at all times wherever you go then only have it hang up on the wall.

6. You also have a big love for knitting, right? Could it be a next step in Studio Meez product line?
How could you guess! I had kept it a secret until now but it can’t harm to talk a little bit about my dreams right? I would like to combine my big love for illustration, graphic design & knitting and in the future hope to make some home decorations and accessories. It is one of my projects I’m working on at this moment.

7. I’m very curious about your house renovation project! In your other blog you share some news and photos of your future new home – I bet this is an exciting process! Tell us about it.
It is an exciting process! It is a dream come true to live in my favorite city. In one of the next days/weeks the big works will start and by the end of August we plan to move. It will probably be the biggest project of our lives and I can’t wait to start decorating and make it into a real home.

8. Through your shop your creations travel all around the world! What means do you use to promote your work?
I’m not so good at promoting my own work. I’m always a little shy about that. I guess my blog is the only thing you can see as some kind of promoting. Of course I’m also thankful to all the people who shared my work and blogged about it. Like you! Thank you Ana!

9. Would you share with us a regular day at work?
Everyday is different and that is what I like about it. One day I can be busy with scribbling and drawing and the other day it can be knitting or trying out new ideas. That is the fun thing about this ‘job’ although it’s also a lot of hard work. The only regular thing about my day is when I check my orders and pack everything to send to their new owners.

10. Would you give us a glimpse of your working space? Describe it and tell us what you love most about it.
Right know me and my love are living in a tiny studio which is only 3 rooms big. My working space is actually a very long table that is in the kitchen area in the living room. I can’t wait until we move, then I will have a whole room for myself, much more space to work in and my love can stop nagging about all the mess I make.

11. I know you have a big love for vintage and you must love photography too, because your photographs are really beautiful! Share your passions and hobbies with us.
I love to rummage around in secondhand shops and thrift markets, always on the look for new and forgotten treasures. My thrift founds are also a source of inspiration for my work and I like to live between beautiful things that have a story to tell. And yes, I never leave the house without my camera. I’m a little bit obsessed to photograph everything that happens in my life, even the smallest things. I have so many passions but too little time for them due to the renovation works and my many projects.

12. You live in Belgium – an European country I’d like to visit one day. Tell us about what you love most in the place where you live. Would you like to live anywhere else one day?
Originally I grew up in a quiet little town and went to live in the city Ghent for my education. I can’t imagine ever leaving this, please. I love the hustle and bustle of this city. It’s a nice cozy city, with beautiful architecture and many cultural happenings. Off course it would be nice to live in another country as well to get to now other cultures and see other things than the ones you know. Who knows, maybe I’ll move to France or Italy someday, that would be nice.

13. If you could live in any historical era of your choice, what would it be? Why?
That’s a difficult question... I think it would be the future because I’m so curious what it will bring to me.
14. What advices would you give to someone who would also like to become an illustrator?
Stay true to yourself and don’t look too often to other illustrators and creators, it’s the only way you will create your own thing and don’t forget to work hard and have fun.

15. What are your plans for the future? And your most unrealistic dreams?
I hope I can keep on doing what I’m doing now and that Studio Meez will keep on growing.
My most unrealistic dream is maybe travel around the world for the rest of my life, I would love to see everything there is to see.

Now a quick question and answer game so we can find a bit more about you and your tastes!

Tell us one:
book: Pluk van de Petteflet by Annie M.G. Schmidt
music: Lykke li
movie: The science of sleep and Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain
personality/artist: Mark Rothko
color: greyisch pastels
object: my camera and Mac
animal: my two lovely cats, Lola & Mies
drink: coffee
food: guacamole
season of the year: Summer

Thank you for sharing your world of wonder with us, Studio Meez!

{the interview series} perdi o fio à meada

Wednesday, 4 January 2012

Our first guest of 2012 is Portuguese and creates beautiful crocheted accessories under the motto perdi o fio à meada. Even though in Portuguese this expression might be synonym of confusion, Vera João Espinha seems to have found the right path: color and nature serve as inspiration to original designs that always evolve in new and surprising directions.
Get yourself lost as well - but in the words and photographs of the work of Vera!

1. Let’s pretend we don’t know each other and I’ve never heard about Vera João Espinha. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Portuguese, I was born in Lisbon and I'm 37 years old. I work as a graphic designer at a book publisher and I created my own brand perdi o fio à meada based on manual production of contemporary accessories.

2. You are a graphic designer working full time in a book publisher and you create crocheted accessories for your brand perdi o fio à meada. How and when was this creative passion born?
I always liked to draw or paint, and design was a natural choice. The relationship with both grandmothers in childhood developed my interests for some traditional techniques and it has grown with me.

3. I confess that I’ve already tried to learn how to crochet with my mother, but I really think I don’t have what it takes! When did you learn how to crochet? Is it a family tradition?
I learned to crochet with my grandmother (father side) when I was 8 or 9 years old. It was a way to keep me busy in the afternoons. It's not exactly a family tradition, it was very common in old generations, women do and have knowledge of traditional techniques.
It’s common that a person starts knitting because she will have a baby, in my case, I always did crochet and knitting, and I still do.

4. You create beautiful handmade accessories and you design and manually create each piece. I love your original designs and the beautiful colors you choose! How do you manage to keep creating new and original models? Would you share your creative process with us?
Besides working at a book publisher, I am a mother of a 6 years old girl and of course I can’t create all the things I imagine because I don’t have much time, so I create pieces in small series.
In this work I usually say “the needle is my pencil”, I don’t sketch the pieces on paper; an idea comes up and I start creating it, then I go along until I’m pleased with the result.

> >

5. I think it’s really hard to pick a favorite piece, but I must say that I especially love your colar circular (circular necklace). Do you have a favorite? Can I ask you what’s been your best seller until now?
I love the circular necklaces, the pétalas brooches and pinecone pin, but the bestseller until now is the abacus pin.

6. Your creations are inspired by nature and you even keep a blog with your beautiful photographs of objectos naturais (natural objects). Tell us a bit about this project and your other sources of inspiration.
My first inspiration comes from childhood, from the contact I had with my two grandmothers, who did everything by hand. My research is based on natural forms, especially from my collection of "natural objects" — stones, leaves, tree branches, seeds. That blog is just a query file to be viewed more easily. Creativity is a continuous process and I may be inspired in different moments of the day, like some colours in a photograph, a painting, a piece I already created before, my grandmother's doilies or when I make some recycled objects with my daughter.

7. How about your collaboration with Margarida Pintassilgo, from Margapinta? I think the pieces are beautiful, combining the best of both worlds. How was it born and how does it work?
I knew Margarida from blogosphere because I bought her a pair of earrings, later we exchanged a few emails and we made some affinities in several areas, and today we become good friends! Margarida proposed to me a collaboration and I accepted because I love her work. The collaboration went well and we could have continued to make other things together but it's hard for me to have the required time to a project like that.

8. You were already featured in so many inspiring blogs and you even received some promising prizes, such asPOP’s, by Serralves. What means do you use to promote your work?
I use internet to promote my work, but the best promotion is when people use the pieces. Some people think that being online is everything and have a page on facebook is indispensable, but they are wrong, there is so much work behind the scenes you don't see. You only have success if people really like it, buy it and use it, just talk about it isn't enough.

9. Would you give us a glimpse of your working space? Describe it and tell us what you love most about it.
At the moment I work at home, don’t have time to go to a studio. I work at night in my living room, sometimes is very confusing.

wip

10. Tell us now about the place where you live and what you love most about it. Would you like to live anywhere else one day?
I always lived in Benfica. Then I moved into my house with my husband, which is very close but isn’t the same. I miss neighborhood life and leave home to go for a walk everywhere without using my car.

11. If you could live in any historical era of your choice, what would it be and why?
I like to live in my time. Right now I feel we have the power to change our future and it's fantastic. I wouldn't like to live the life of anyone or in another time.

12. You take beautiful photographs, that you share in your blog and that you even turned into postcards. Is photography another passion of yours? What else are you passionate about?
Pictures are almost my right arm from my memory. I like photographing, but I have other passions, just don't have time for all…

13. We are both Portuguese,so I don’t resist asking: what are the main problems you face being an artist in our country, Portugal?
The government should truly support small business owners like me, giving more value to those who promote the traditional art of Portuguese culture. The taxes we pay for everything are very high, is difficult to support a little business like this, we need to invest in ourselves because they don’t invest in us, culture is no supported as it used to be.

pinha
quem quer, quem quer…

14. What advices would you give to someone who would also like to become a designer/artist?
A handmade work requires a lot of our time, sometimes consume us completely, and it’s difficult to separate it from the rest of our lives when it becomes a serious business. If we really love what we do, try don’t give it up. It’s important to believe in our work, we must be good at what we do, and I always say this but it's true: we make our own luck.

15. What are your plans for the future? And your most unrealistic dreams?
A few years ago I used to plan my life, but is frustrating when we reach a certain point and we don't achieve them all. Now I don’t make lists, there are also good unexpected things that we don't plan.
But I have my dreams… of course. I would like one day to have a business of my own. Would love to have a studio with lots of space, and occasionally open to the public to show my work.

Now a quick question and answer game so we can find a bit more about you and your tastes!
Tell us one:

book: The House of the Spirits and Memoirs of a Geisha
