The trip to Munich was much more than Munich Jewellery Week, but this was undoubtedly the great pretext for this visit and what made the days in the city even richer.

Although the focus is primarily on the important exhibitions Schmuck and Talente integrated in Handwerk & Design event, all parallel programming scattered around the city helps to make these days a real treasure hunt.
Map in hand, galleries multiply, from more conventional spaces to studios and workshops of artists and other less accustomed to receiving this kind of events, such as empty rooms in design offices, shelves in furniture stores, small pop-up stores, storefronts, caravans... artists of various nationalities display their work individually or in group, showing the best of what is done today in the area of artistic jewelry.

I came back with mixed feelings, between the boom of inspiration and a bit of frustration... divided between all the wonder I could get to know and the notion that our Portuguese market is still very limited to receive it. I came with open horizons, the desire to create more and better, try new materials, shapes and concepts...

Munich certainly be worth visiting at any time of year, but if you love jewelry, don't miss the opportunity to do so during this amazing week!

Torre Burgo // Souto de Moura

PT

EN
Today I leave you with some photos of the most beautiful office tower in the city of Porto, designed by Souto de Moura.

Completed in 2006, the Burgo Tower stands out along Boavista Avenue. Welcomes you in the company of an Ângelo de Sousa sculpture, in a kind of high square, subtly hiding the entrance to the main building in one of the side walls, while allowing us to partially bypass it looking to the sky.
The project comprises in fact two volumes, which cleverly communicate with each other, using the same language, while taking the necessary differences, but it's that vertical element that draws our attention - there are about 20 floors of well-defined lines, whose elegance makes them seem more deceiving the illusion of verticality with the multiplication of the horizontals, in a structural game of full and empty spaces that turns out to be the identity of the building.

Looking more closely it's easy to let ourselves be carried away by the complexity of what seems so simple after all, the genius of the details, the clarity of geometry that makes it all seem to be in the right place.

And, yes, the view up there is amazing!

Siza Design

Tuesday, 10 March 2015

PT

EN
Álvaro Siza's design is always more or less present in his architecture. Anyone who visits one of his public buildings will certainly notice handles, furniture or signs that were also designed by the hand of the author of the architectural project.
You may also have seen or used cutlery, homeware or decorative objects - some of them are for sale in Serralves or Index shop, for example.

Who had the chance to try them, like me, at Serralves Museum, or during the formative years in FAUP, will certainly have defects to point out, but rarely aesthetic ones.
Siza has a sensitive and thought trace, even when it is the result of a more direct and intuitive approach - the solution is always a consequence of the function, with attention to the cleanliness of geometry, the beauty of materials, the sometimes debatable but underlying comfort, the absence of excesses or unnecessary formality, without forgeting that touch, so many times discreet, that makes that object special. Who hasn't yet drank port wine from this glass?

I particularly love the drawings, always, some pieces of furniture and lighting. And if you haven't visited the exhibition and happen to be around, don't miss it - either to remember, learn, criticize, admire or envy, it's waiting for you at the Municipal Gallery of Matosinhos, until April 26th.

PT

A oferta do site é acessível, interessante e bastante variada.

Aproveitem!

EN
This is far from being a fashion blog, but it's not the first time that I write here about products that I like or use, especially when they have to do with the handmande universe, design and contemporary artists.
This time Firmoo offered me something different: to publish a review about a pair of sunglasses of the brand. Although it's not a usual thing for me to do and I don't intend to turn it into a habit, as this is an article that often accompanies me in the wallet these days of sunshine, I thought: why not?

The offer on the site is quite accessible, interesting and varied. I took the oppportunity to choose a model that I wanted for a while: a reinterpretation of a classic, with plastic frame, in tortoise. I was afraid to order glasses online, because it's pretty hard to choose a model for me even live... but even though I have a slim face and most of the eyeglasses seem too large for me, I actually prefer models with a frame that stands out - so they may be big, but it's by choice!
The site's interface is quite intuitive and allows a number of customizations and extras. Moreover, taking as an example a pair of glasses that I use, it was easy to see by the code in the stems the relationship between the size of mine and this new pair I wanted to order - I didn't know about this, but it's quite useful when you order such a product without having the opportunity to try it on.

Two weeks and a good and fast feedback throughout the ordering process later, I received the expected pair of sunglasses by mail. Accompanied by a rigid box, a flexible pouch, a cleaning cloth and a very useful screw key, the glasses are lightweight and very comfortable.
A classic style with a twist of innovation, perfect for a sporty and modern look.
In conclusion: I was very pleased! But don't rely only on my word here... you have the opportunity to experience for yourselves: just leave a comment in this post.
The first five comments will be entitled to a discount of $30 to use in a purchase on Firmoo. Enjoy!

Porto Poetic

Monday, 14 April 2014

PT

First presented in Milan in 2013, the exhibition Porto Poetic was at Almeida Garrett Municipal Library until yesterday.
The exhibition explores through models, drawings, photographs and real examples the manifestations of the work of the architect, from the scale of the object, to the building and urban intervention. It focuses mainly on the work of Siza and Souto Moura, but also shows a number of cases of the best that has been done in this area in the North of Portugal, as an example of works created in the context of what is known as the School of Porto.

It was easy to get lost there for hours, seeing carefully all the information. Reviewing plans of works that I've studied, recalling the formative years at FAUP, admiring photos of other times of buildings I know today, admiring models of distant projects I've never visited, recognizing the sensitive trait of the Masters - especially Siza, for me.

It's a pity you can no longer visit the exhibition, if you didn't - but I leave you here with some photos, enjoy!

As minhas favoritas continuam a ser as criações Filipe Sousa e as novas linhas Miss Júlia e Mr. Sousa seguem-lhes as pisadas.

Right on time, sunny recent days finally inviting us to dream with lighter clothes and shoes for the new season ...
Last Saturday, I was invited to attend the presentation of new Eureka Collection at Eskada Club, in Vizela.
The theme Escape into Nature was recreated in a refined yet refreshing and relaxed atmosphere and there was great expectation about the news, especially for the awaited presentation of the exclusive collection of the 5th anniversary of Eureka stores, signed by Eugénio Campos.

From the front row I could see all the details and add some more fresh designs to my wishlist (what a nice coincidence that my birthday's right before summer!). My favorite creations are still Filipe Sousa's and the new lines Miss Julia and Mr. Sousa seem to follow their footsteps.

My collaboration with the brand (more specifically with the Flagship Store of Santa Catarina Street, 237,  in Porto) will continue this season - if you're curious, have a little sneak peek on page 23 of the new catalog that should already be available in stores (or have a look at the hands of the girl on the second photo of this post)... go and have a look at the fresh new designs!

EN
Illustration has gradually been assumed as a new art form.
Traditionally it would be a representation that, regardless of the medium and technique used, would be associated with a text - a book, a magazine or newspaper, a poster - and served precisely to illustrate the same text or specific object, by transmitting a message with a non-photographic image. May be more or less explicit, realistic or personal, but illustration, by definition , isn't supposed to live for itself, isolated from its context.

But this concept is changing. Currently it is common to call illustration an artistic expression in the form of drawing or painting that moves away from the traditional circuit of the artwork. Artworks are expensive, unique, only to be exhibited in galleries - illustrations are generally more affordable, are often reproduced either in paper or transposed into a number of other media as objects or accessories (I actually do this with my own work as well).

Illustration has now a value in itself - it doesn't even need to be associated with a specific text or context. If this definition is correct or makes sense I wouldn't know... but it doesn't worry me too much, because the truth is that these works carry messages and have artistic value in themselves - and perhaps it's correct to say they slightly deviate from the traditional view that we have of art.
There are even Galleries exhibiting illustration only - and in all its splendor, like Ó Galeria in Porto. These contemporary spaces also allow to take this art to more people, showing art as something more informal and accessible than traditional galleries - allowing also to promote the work of young artists who often otherwise would keep their works in the drawer.

Last Saturday we went to Fórum da Maia to visit the 3rd edition of Uivo, an exhibition of selected illustrations by some of the most interesting and promising names in the field. And so illustration also reaches new spaces and new audiences. It's worth a visit, until March 30th.

Emilie Flöge

Thursday, 30 January 2014

PT

[Encontrei as fotos neste fantástico pinterest.

EN
Sometimes her story ends up as inspiring as the artist - and perhaps that's why they inspire them so much .

This time I bring you Emilie Flöge. I found a series of photos while searching the net for works of Gustav Klimt, one of my favorite painters, and soon caught my attention.
Muse, life companion and close friend of the painter, she also stands out for being a businesswoman in the fashion world, at a time when the business world belonged to men. With her younger sister and Klimt's sister-in-law, Helene, she successfully led a haute couture fashion salon in Vienna between 1904 and 1938, when World War II started affecting the city.

Revolutionary for her time, Emilie's fashion was characterized by patterns, ruffles, feminine dresses in loose, comfortable lines, fancy hats. How well any of these models would be portrayed in a Klimt's painting , right?

[I found these photos in this amazing pinterest. In the subtitles, you can read full descriptions with dates and other interesting information.]

Deixo-vos aqui apenas alguns exemplos.

EN
I like to see the work of jewelers I appreciate almost as much as I like peeking their workspaces. Jewelry needs many machines and tools. There is a lot of clutter and mess, many distinct phases of work... There is a big difference and a long distance between the mess of the workbench and the clean and delicate beauty of the finished piece.
It's difficult to make attractive a workspace with these features... but even though this is essentially a manual work, rather than technicians, we are artists. We don't only produce the jewels, but also imagine, draw and even wear them. Maybe that's why the workspaces of jewelers - at least those that inspire me, of course - convey a little of this mix between what's necessary for its function and what's essential for the inspiration that causes.

I leave you here just a few examples.
It's interesting to see how the jewels seem to emanate the spirit of the space where they were born, isn't it?
