Vale sempre a pena uma visita à Bienal de Cerveira!

Depois de ter visitado pela primeira vez no ano passado não quero deixar de voltar. Desta vez o evento decorreu excepcionalmente em dois anos consecutivos, em jeito de celebração dos 40 anos.

Imperdível o passeio pela simpática vila onde cada recanto é invadido por novas expressões artísticas, a visita a cada sala do Castelo, com as obras a concurso, e a ida ao Fórum, onde em cada evento é homenageado um novo artista (desta vez Cruzeiro Seixas). Mas são muitos mais os espaços, as performances e eventos, impossível ver tudo num dia.

Desta vez, um pouco por acaso, tivemos a sorte de assistir a uma visita guiada ao Fórum, onde foi um prazer descobrir mais sobre a história da Bienal e a visão de Jaime Isidoro, pintor e galerista português, que acabaria por lhe dar início.

It's always worth a visit to Bienal de Cerveira!

After going for the first time last year, I don't want to miss it again. This time the event took place exceptionally in two consecutive years, in a way to celebrate the 40 years.

Don't miss a walk through the friendly village where each corner is invaded by new artistic expressions, the visit to each room of the Castle, with the works of the contest, and the Forum, where in each event a new artist is honored (this time Cruzeiro Seixas). But there are many more spaces, performances and events, impossible to see everything in one day.

This time, a bit by chance, we were fortunate enough to attend a guided tour of the Forum, where it was a pleasure to find out more about the history of the Bienal and the vision of Jaime Isidoro, a Portuguese painter and gallery owner, who started it.

Vale bem a pena a visita, para ficar a conhecer o conceito e o apartamento, pelas exposições, pela conversa, pelas vistas - durante a tarde em dias da semana ou ao Sábado, em dia de eventos especiais, como é o caso deste dia 14. Aproveitem!

A home that is a gallery, a gallery that is a test to the limits of multidisciplinarity.

This is Galeria Oitavo [Eighth Gallery], located since January 2017 in the apartment of the co-founders, Rita Vila-Chã Martins and Francisco Moura Relvas, in the so-called Cooperativa dos Pedreiros, in Rua da Alegria, in Porto.

Well worth the visit, to get to know the concept and the apartment, for the exhibitions, the talk, the views - over the afternoon on weekdays or on Saturdays, on special days, as is the case on this 14th. Enjoy!

Vale a pena conhecer as várias personalidades de Almada, o seu sentido de humor, os deliciosos auto-retratos, as linhas de expressividade exacta dos seus desenhos - aquela que ele considerava a maior de todas as artes.

Vale ainda a pena, sempre, rever o Desterrado e apanhar sol no pátio do Museu - a exposição pode ser visitada até 18 de Março e a entrada é gratuita todos os Domingos até às 14h, por isso não há desculpas. Aproveitem!

Almada Negreiros, exhibition at Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis.

It's worth knowing the various personalities of Almada, his sense of humor, his delightful self-portraits, the exact and expressive lines of his drawings - the one he considered the greatest of all the arts.

It's also worthwhile, always, to review the Desterrado and sunbathe in the patio of the Museum - the exhibition can be visited until March 18th and the entrance is free every Sunday until 2pm, so there are no excuses. Enjoy!

Chaves // Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso

O Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso foi só mais um pretexto para escolher Chaves como destino para um fim-de-semana prolongado, uma simpática cidade transmontana que ainda não conhecia.

O Museu, projecto de Álvaro Siza, foi inaugurado no Verão do ano passado e estende-se junto ao rio, bem perto do centro. Eleva-se do solo para permitir a passagem e algumas brincadeiras fotográficas entre as enigmáticas lâminas com recortes geométricos ao nível do solo, que, aparentemente aleatórias, parecem trazer para a arquitectura as linhas cinéticas das pinturas de Nadir, num jogo de ângulos, direcções, enfiamentos e sombras.

Os percursos são pensados para se poder admirar o edifício como um todo, ao longo da sua fachada eminentemente horizontal, que se repercute no interior através dos rasgos que permitem acompanhar a paisagem envolvente enquanto admiramos as cidades geométricas de Nadir.

Na pintura de Nadir Afonso reconhecem-se arquitecturas e abstracções, fruto das suas vivências profissionais, das suas viagens, da sua forma de ver o mundo, com ordem e método, mas vastos horizontes.

Vale bem a pena a visita!

Como o centro é pequeno e tudo se visita bem a pé, facilmente se passa um dia a visitar o Museu, o percurso ribeirinho que o liga ao jardim das termas, parando a meio para admirar a ponte romana sobre o Tâmega e subindo depois até ao Castelo pela Rua Direita, que nesta altura é fria, mas vem acompanhada de música de Natal.

Não podem ainda deixar de fazer várias pausas pelo caminho para provar e repetir os famosos pastéis de Chaves que, sem dúvida, aqui sabem muito melhor!

The Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art was just another excuse to choose Chaves as a destination for a long weekend, a friendly city in the north of Portugal that I didn't know yet.

The Museum, a project by Álvaro Siza, was inaugurated in the summer of last year and extends near the river, very close to the center. It rises from the ground to allow passage and some photographic tricks between the enigmatic walls with geometric cutouts in the ground-level, that may appear to be placed by chance, but seem to bring to the architecture the kinetic lines of Nadir's paintings in a game of angles, directions and shadows.

The paths are designed to be able to admire the building as a whole, along its eminently horizontal façade, which is reflected in the interior through the openings that allow to see the surrounding landscape while admiring the geometric cities of Nadir.

Nadir Afonso's painting is filled with architectures and abstractions, fruit of his professional experiences, his travels, his way of seeing the world, with order and method, but vast horizons.

Well worth the visit!

As the center is small and everything is easily visited on foot, it's easy to spend a day visiting the Museum, the riverside route that connects it to the garden of the thermal spa, stopping to admire the Roman bridge over the Tâmega and then ascending to the Castle by Rua Direita, which at this point is cold, but comes with Christmas music.

One must, of course, make several stops along the way to taste and repeat the famous Pastéis de Chaves (a local delicacy of puff pastry and meat), that, without doubt, tastes a lot better here!

2017 é ano de Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira!

E eu, que depois de tantos anos a pensar no assunto, nunca lá tinha ido, acabei por redimir-me este ano. São imensos os espaços de actividades e exposição, vale bem a pena um looooongo dia de passeio - ou vários.

Desta vez ficou a faltar uma visita à Casa do Artista Jaime Isidoro, mas acho que é sempre bom ficar com pretextos para voltar.

Se estiverem pelo Norte de Portugal, aproveitem também as férias de Verão para uma visita!

2017 is the year of International Art Biennial of Cerveira!

And I, who after so many years of thinking about it, had never gone there, finally redeemed myself this year. There are lots of activities and exhibition spaces, it's really worth a looooong day of walking around - or several.

This time I missed the visit to the House of Artist Jaime Isidoro, but I guess it's always good to have excuses to return.

If you happen to be around the North of Portugal, enjoy the summer holidays for a visit too!

O aniversário da minha mãe na semana passada foi o pretexto para um dia de passeio!

Era dia de sol, feira semanal e de Festa  das Cruzes em Barcelos, por isso o centro estava animado.

Depois de um bom almoço e de uma visita ao Museu de Olaria, foi altura de provar os primeiros churros do ano. Está oficialmente inaugurada a época das festas populares, yay!

My mum's birthday last week was the pretext for a day of sightseeing!

It was a sunny day, with the center of Barcelos cheered up by the weekly market and popular festival Festa das Cruzes.

After a good lunch and a visit to the Pottery Museum, it was time to taste the first churros of the year. The season of popular festivals is oficially opened, yay!

Museu de Serralves

O Museu de Serralves deixou de ter entrada gratuita todos os Domingos de manhã, para passar a ser gratuito apenas na manhã do primeiro Domingo do mês.

Ontem estava uma enchente, mas nem por isso quisemos deixar passar a oportunidade de ir ver as exposições. Embora o nome mais sonante fosse a Sonnabend Collection, com as obras de Warhol, Oldenburg ou Lichtenstein, foi a exposição No Limiar da Visibilidade de Wolfgang Tillmans que mais tempo dediquei a admirar.

Serralves Museum is no longer free every Sunday morning, now you have free entry only in the morning of the first Sunday of the month.

Yesterday it was full of people, but we didn't want to miss the exhibitions. Even though the stonger name was of the Sonnabend Collection, with its Warhol, Oldenburg or Lichtenstein, it was the exhibition On the Verge of Visibility by Wolfgang Tillmans that took me longer to admire.

The horizon, the color, the sky, the sea.

Alfândega do Porto // Guerreiros de Xian

Até 11 de Janeiro é possível ver na Alfândega do Porto um conjunto de reproduções que permitem imaginar a grandiosidade do incrível achado arqueológico do chamado Exército dos Guerreiros de Terracota.

Os Guerreiros de Xian foram descobertos em 1974, cerca de 2200 anos depois de terem sido enterrados junto do Mausoléu do primeiro imperador da China. As mais de 8000 figuras descobertas por acaso viriam a revelar-se uma das mais misteriosas e grandiosas descobertas do século XX.

Não me importava nada de viajar até terras longínquas para ver os originais, mas... já não é mau se puderem passar pela Alfândega para ver esta amostra!

Until January 11, you can see in Alfândega do Porto a set of reproductions that allow us to imagine the grandeur of the incredible archaeological find of the so called Terracotta Army.

The Xian Warriors were discovered in 1974, about 2200 years after they were buried near the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of China. The more than 8000 figures discovered by chance would become one of the most mysterious and grand discoveries of the twentieth century.

I wouldn't mind traveling to distant lands to see the originals, but... it's not bad at all if you have the opportunity to have a look at this sample!

Oliva Creative Factory

Num dos passados fins-de-semana foi altura de ir finalmente fazer uma visita à Oliva Creative Factory, em São João da Madeira.

Embora estivesse a decorrer o Sunset Market, o movimento de público não era muito, o que é uma pena... ficando tão perto do Porto não há desculpa para não visitar, sobretudo pelo Núcleo de Arte, onde é possível perder-se horas em boa companhia.

As exposições vão variando entre uma cuidada selecção de obras que pertencem às colecções residentes, destacando-se neste momento uma exposição totalmente dedicada à Arte Bruta, intrigante, perturbadora e muito bem documentada - para ver ainda até final de Setembro.

A renovada Oliva, indústria metalúrgica fundada em 1925 que ficou em tempos conhecida pela famosa máquina de costura, apresenta-se agora como pólo de inovação e criatividade, destacando-se a incubadora de indústrias criativas e conjunto de lojas, onde podemos encontrar nomes como Dam, Shoes Closet, Catraia e Daniela ponto final. Ah! E ainda a simpática cafetaria Oliva Palito, com decoração e tapas deliciosas... só bons motivo para lá ir, portanto.

Over one of the past weekends we decided to finally go meet Oliva Creative Factory, in São João da Madeira.

Although there was a Sunset Market happening, the movement of people wasn't much, which is a pitty... being so close to Porto there is no excuse not to visit, especially for the Art Museum, where you can lose yourself for hours in good company.

The exhibitions range from a careful selection of works from the permanent collections, with a highlight at this time for an exhibition entirely dedicated to Art Brut, intriguing, disturbing and well documented - to see until the end of September.

The renewed Oliva, metallurgical industry founded in 1925 that was once known for the famous sewing machine, now presents itself as a center of innovation and creativity, especially for the incubator of creative industries and shops where we can find names like Dam, Shoes Closet, Catraia  and Daniela ponto final. Oh! And also the lovely coffee shop Oliva Palito, with delicious decor and snacks... only good reasons to go there, as you can see.

1ª Bienal de Arte de Gaia

Está a decorrer a 1ª Bienal de Arte de Gaia até 8 de Agosto, numa série de espaços da cidade.

Um excelente pretexto para ver obras de artistas novos e consagrados, ficar a conhecer alguns espaços de referência que ainda não tinha tido oportunidade de visitar e ainda percorrer algumas ruas de Gaia com algumas das melhores vistas para o rio Douro e a cidade do Porto.

Desde a vista clássica e imperdível a partir da Serra do Pilar, até aos enquadramentos menos óbvios a partir da Rua de General Torres e, sobretudo, das muitas subidas e descidas que ligam a zona ribeirinha ao Jardim do Morro... as possibilidades de visitas a exposições e passeios são imensas.

Não percam também!

It's taking place the 1st Bienal of Art of Gaia until August 8, in a series of spaces around the city.

An excellent excuse to see art works by new and established artists, get to know some interesting spaces I didn't yet had the opportunity to visit and even walk along some streets of Gaia with some of the best views of Douro River and the city of Porto.

From the classic and must-see view from Serra do Pilar, to some less obvious frameworks from Rua do General Torres and especially the many ups and downs that connect the waterfront to Jardim do Morro... the possibilities of visits to exhibitions and tours are immense.

If you happen to be around, don't miss it too!

Jewellery Meets Illustration // the opening!

E foi assim, no passado Sábado, a inauguração da exposição Jewellery Meets Illustration, na Ó! Galeria, no Porto.

Muitas visitas, alguns reencontros e um belíssimo resultado, entre jóias e ilustrações a dialogar entre si! As minhas jóias, por exemplo, tiveram o prazer de ficar à conversa com as ilustrações de Maria Herreros (ver fotos 4 e 5).

And the opening of the exhibition Jewellery Meets Illustration last Saturday at Ó! Galeria, in Porto, was like this.

Lots of visitors, some reunions and a great result, with jewels and illustrations in dialogue with each other! My jewels for example, had the pleasure of chatting with Maria Herreros illustrations (see photos 4 and 5).

You Love Me, You Love Me Not

Oportunidade para visitar no Porto uma selecção de arte contemporânea da colecção Sindika Dokolo, essencialmente centrada em artistas do continente africano, mas também com a presença de autores de outras paragens, como é o caso de Nick Cave (sim, esse) e os seus incríveis soundsuits.

As fotos estão um pouco miseráveis, porque foram tiradas com o telemóvel (tenho que recuperar o hábito de andar com a máquina fotográfica atrás de mim!), mas isso é apenas mais um pretexto para fazerem vocês mesmos uma visita à exposição - a entrada é gratuita e estará na Galeria Municipal da Biblioteca Almeida Garrett até dia 17 de Maio. Um passeio pelos Jardins do Palácio de Cristal também valerá a pena para completar o passeio, pensem nisso!

Opportunity to visit in Porto a selection of contemporary art of Sindika Dokolo's collection, primarily focused on artists from the African continent, but also with the presence of authors from other places, such as Nick Cave (yes, that one) and his amazing soundsuits.

The pictures are a bit miserable, because they were taken with my cellphone (I have to recover the habit of walking with my camera with me!), but that's just another excuse to make you visit the exhibition for yourselves - the entry is free and it will be in the Municipal Gallery of Almeida Garrett Library until May 17th. A walk through Crystal Palace Gardens is also worth to complete the tour, so if you happen to be around, think about it!

Remade in Portugal "in-utilitas"

Passeio pela Baixa

Uma das coisas de que mais gosto de fazer nesta época natalícia é evitar os centros comerciais e dar longos passeios pela Baixa, para ver as decorações de Natal, os eventos especiais que se multiplicam nesta altura do ano, parar para um café quentinho enquanto os outros correm às compras cheios de sacos... por isso é tão bom quando os dias são frios mas de sol, permitindo aproveitar os passeios pela rua, pelo comércio tradicional e pelos mercados de Natal ao máximo.

E já agora, deixo aqui um post com um bom resumo daquilo que ainda há para ver, para quem gosta de fazer compras de Natal especiais... sim, o Bazar dos Doze, na CRU, onde podem encontrar alguns dos meus produtos ilustrados para venda, também lá está, visitem!

One of the things I like to do during this holiday season is to avoid the malls and go for long walks downtown, to see Christmas decorations, visit special events characteristic of this time of year, stop for a warm coffee while other people pass by with lots of shopping bags in their hands... so it's even better when days are cold but sunny, allowing you to enjoy the street walks, the traditional shops and  Christmas markets to the fullest.
