Is it better to speak or to die?

PT
Call Me By Your Name é um filme belíssimo, cheio de mensagens subliminares e maravilhosos pequenos nadas.

EN
Call Me By Your Name is a beautiful movie, filled with subliminal messages and wonderful details. An intense story of love and desire, full of poetry and eroticism.
Enchanted by the beauty of Italian landscapes, the warm colors of summer, the moments of hedonistic laziness between water and grass, music, art and books.
We witness a voyage of discovery, the destructive force of a first love that we know that can not last, with the certainty that the world will not remain the same after its passage. Impossible to refuse something that you want so much, even knowing that the loss will carry a bit of us with it... but to feel nothing so as not to feel anything - what a waste!

Yes, I admit to have a certain fascination with stories of serial killers and psychopaths. From movies like Seven or American Psycho, to series like Dexter and Hannibal - if it's good I'll want to see it, if it's based on a true story, the curiosity and interest increase.
Mindhunter, the Netflix series based on the book of the same name, is a free adaptation of the story of the two FBI agents who have set the groundwork for behavioral science and criminal profiling as we know it today. Yes, some of what we see in the easiness with which the profiles are presented in series like Criminal Minds has, nonetheless, some reason for being.

The fact that the production and much of the direction is David Fincher's responsibility would already be enough reason for me to give the series a chance, but the theme and the incredible characters (especially Holden) convinced me quickly - the way we follow some crimes and have contact with some of the best known real serial killers is particularly captivating.

The recent news of the death of Charles Manson and the fact that I finished seeing the first season yesterday, seemed like good excuses to leave you with the desire to see the series as well and, perhaps, to investigate a little more on the subject. I have already added this book and this one to the wishlist!

Toda a gente esconde coisas, em casa, no trabalho…

Vale bem a pena ver Paula Rego, Histórias e Segredos - no Porto passa até Quarta-Feira no Passos Manuel.

If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
Louise Banks, Arrival

PT

Yes, we can spend practically the entire film Arrival imagining the possibility of extraterrestrial life coming to earth, assessing the purpose and outcome of a contact, admiring the importance of language, the flaws that exist in the way we communicate and its terrible consequences, admitting that together we're stronger and that the global vision of the world is more than ever in need of a review, appreciating the flawless image, admirable performance of the actors and the beautiful soundtrack... but what lingers stronger in the memory, for me, are the last 10 minutes: those in which we realize that life is worth living if by the time we look back we know that we wouldn't have done anything different - and the best is to start now, not letting the chains of time (past, present, future) bind us.

[The Walk]

PT

Some dreams seem impossible.
When we have a plan and everything seems to go wrong is inevitable to think if it's a sign that we should give up or just a test to our ability to fight for what we want.

The Walk tells the adventures undergone by Philippe Petit to accomplish his dream at age 24 - what he calls le coup and what would be considered the artistic crime of the century.
After watching him walk illegally on a wire with about 60 meters long, to the height of 400 meters between the twin towers of the World Trade Center for 45 minutes, using only his body and a pole of 8 meters, I felt small, very small - as small as those people who admired him from the floor with their mouth open and the eyes on the air on that morning of August 7, 1974.

Oscars 2015

PT

EN
The big night of the Oscars is almost here!
Due to the big time difference it's rare for me to watch the event live until the end and I don't always have a very clear opinion about my favorites, because this year should be one of the few I've seen most of the films nominated for the main categories - among the candidates for best picture, for example, I'm only missing Selma.

There are always great failures and absences to point out in the list - I miss Gone Girl, Interstellar and Jake Gyllenhaal, for example - but I still think the list of this year seems well filled and balanced.
I was expecting something more of Boyhood, though... and I can't say I'm a big fan of Wes Anderson, but this The Grand Budapest Hotel is surely the best film of his I've seen to date. David Fincher, on the other hand, as one of my favorite directors, keeps exceeding my expectations.
It's interesting to see how among the candidates are so many films based on true stories, but for me, one of the biggest revelations was probably Birdman - an amazing film in every way.

Let's see who brings more statuettes home!
What do you think?

I'd consider myself a realist, alright? But in philosophical terms I'm what's called a pessimist... I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself - we are creatures that should not exist by natural law... We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everbody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

EN
I was never a religious person.
I was baptized, went to catechesis, made my first communion - all because it was what people expected me to do (the kind of things we do during our education without anyone asking our opinion). At the end of this phase, when I was asked, with 12, if I wanted to continue, I said no. For what? In my mind that never made much sense... if the choice was going to be mine, the decision was that. Does it make sense to follow a path we don't belong to, just because most of people around us seem to do it and expect us to do it too?

I never had a knack for following orders I didn't understand. Since I was old enough  for questioning, I questioned. If it was convenient or required for any reason to fulfill a certain task, I fulfilled - my difficulty was never in learning or executing - but I always demonstrated a strong resistance to the lack of outrage, lack of self initiative or thinking, to resignation in general.
I avoid , however, judging or converting those who think differently, for the same reason that I won't accept they do the same. You'll hardly hear me take radical positions in public or counteract the will of the group - as you won't see me following the group or hear me lie simply to be accepted. In alternative, I always preferred to be alone, even if they guaranteed me that the party was more fun on the other side of the door.
Eventually I stopped trying to change, though it disillusioned people who thought it would be for my own good... but I discovered that there are more people like me, who don't believe what they don't understand, who prefer to live unsatisfied and indignant than choosing the easy way - is there any other choice after all?

People can believe what they want and invent the god who gives them the necessary strength to continue. This god doesn't have to be in an altar or need you to know prayers and rituals by heart. This god can be a man like us.
Some think that those who don't believe in God don't believe at all, but this is not true - there are so many great things to believe in, around and within us.
We can resign ourselves to reality. Or we can turn this journey into the most wonderful adventure in the face of the earth, the story they will tell about us or that we'd like to remember before leaving this world. We can be whoever we want - at least it's nice to think so.

How about you, have you seen Life of Pi?

Inovador. Polémico. Extravagante. Desconcertante. Dramático. Teatral. Simbólico. Surpreendente. Ultra-violento.

Tudo no sítio certo, diria.

_

Innovative. Controversial. Extravagant. Disconcerting. Dramatic. Theatrical. Symbolic. Surprising. Ultra-violent.

This is one of those movies that remain in our head. We may not understand everything that's going on, but it's not easy to take our eyes off the screen. It's like the mix of some nausea, some frown, some question and exclamation marks (sometimes simultaneously), some macabre curiosity and you end up with the feeling that, as much as we've prepared ourselves, we were caught by surprise.

I don't exactly remember when I first saw A Clockwork Orange. I know that I was more confused than enlightened, more sick than convinced - the reaction is inevitable, even if bad, even if clouded by misunderstanding. I didn't know if I wanted to give it a second chance - the truth is that I don't even remember if I saw the movie until the end, I think not.

But something in me thought it would be a movie to treasure.
Anyone who knows me knows I don't like easy things... but one would also know that I can't be convinced by something that doesn't seem to make sense - and this orange is anything but superficial: it has several layers, needs to be peeled and eaten with calm. And I needed to know more to open my appetite.

For many years a book caught my attention in my parents' home - for the interesting graphism and the strangeness of the small character in the cover. Look, it was A Clockwork Orange, which seemed to be waiting for me, many years before I was born.

I read the book and I think everyone should read it. Very good, one of the most remarkable I've ever read - and in light of the book the film takes on a new dimension.
Anthony Burgess wrote a raw book and invents a language to fit his needs - that causes difficulty in reading, but it's also what makes it catchy and genial. A glossary at the end of the book helps to understand the Nadsat, but shortly afterwards it's easy to get used to the strangeness of the language, which also helps to situate the narrative in a strange and - we like to think - distant world.

It's a film of details and great gestures. Although I can't absolutely say I'm a Kubrick's fan (I was traumatized when I had to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey at school, but I can now say with certainty that this one and The Shining offset the initial shock), I admit that everything in the film approaches the sinister and surreal atmosphere of the book, enphasized by irony, a mordant sense of humor and an amazing soundtrack... oh, and a delicious futuristic decoration, 70s style. Everything in the right place, I would say.
Exaggeration passes the message and the excess of violence is perhaps a warning rather than a metaphor.
The difficulty of a society that doesn't know how to respect the individuality of each within a system that requires formatting to survive, even if the individual doesn't understand that to be free is to respect the freedom of others.
If we did all that we wanted it was chaos. If we were all the same we would no longer make sense. That is the contradiction of the clockwork orange.

And to compensate, let's end this reflection with a smile (well, don't laugh too much though)! I leave you with the reason that led to this post in the first place: the mask that we took to the Ball of the Vampires, the closing party of Fantasporto (a Portuguese film festival), last Saturday. Do we look familiar to you?...
