Another Vision, Ana Pina
Colar.

And here are the photos of the piece Another Vision, created for the project Jewellery Meets Illustration!
The piece, inspired by the illustration Vision [see also photo 4, here] by Maria Herreros, will be on display at Ó! Galeria until June 3rd, so if you happen to be around Porto, you still have the opportunity to see it live, in the company of the other jewels and illustrations that make up this curious collection of (re)interpretations.

To learn a bit more about it, read below a few words I wrote for the Catalog of the exhibition, about the concept and how using someone else's work as a source of inspiration contributed to the creation of this piece:

Another Vision, Ana Pina
Necklace. Gold plated sterling silver, plastic miniature painted with enamel, metal chain.

There was an obvious intersection between the illustration and the language of my own work. I'm not used to using someone else's work as a starting point to create a piece of mine, but when this happens, it's inevitable to look at other's work in light of our own work - we end up seeing what we want to see.

I considered the user of the piece of jewelry as the main character of its own frame. As such, I decided to pick up the monocle that appears in the illustration Vision and simplify it a little more, deconstructing it into circles of different diameters (relating to my Orbital Collection) - as if the object had fallen to the ground and, dematerialized, were now mounted as a decorative abstract piece.

Another of the elements that caught my attention in the illustration was the silhouette of the smallest character that seems to be in danger - perhaps influenced by my background, I was reminded of the miniatures that are used in architectural models and couldn't resist to add it to the composition - this little one is also half lost and tries to somehow find his place within a structure whose size seems disproportionate and out of his control. Ultimately, it turns out to be the liaison between a piece of jewelry that could exist by itself and the illustration of Maria Herreros.

Galeria, no Porto.

Jewellery Meets Illustration is a project integrated in the celebration of 10 years of contemporary jewelry association PIN, with the support of Ó! Galeria (a lovely illustration gallery in Porto), curated by Aurea Praga (aka Golden Plague) and Katja Tschimmel.

The context and originality of the project by itself, already turned the invitation into irresistible, but having been made by Aurea, one of the friends and artists (a jeweler and illustrator herself) I admire the most, to the inevitable "yes" I added the honor of being selected to participate and the enthusiasm of seeing my work among so many other artists I already follow and admire for a long time.

10 jewelers and 10 illustrators were invited to participate and after being combined in pairs, asked to create an original piece, inspired by the work of the other.
The challenge is to relate two arts that apparently don't have that much in common (or do they?) but that ultimately deal with sources of inspiration, imaginary and techniques that can meet and be part of the same universe in a surprising and harmonious way.
I'm very curious to see the result!

I leave you for now with some pictures of the work in progress of my own piece... if you want to see more and discover the illustration that inspired me, pay a visit to Ó! Galeria - the opening is next Saturday, May 9th, from 4pm on!
(Or, if you're not in Porto, and only in that case, just wait a few more days... I'll certainly show you the rest ;)
