Assim é a Galeria Oitavo, localizada desde Janeiro de 2017 no apartamento dos co-fundadores, Rita Vila-Chã Martins e Francisco Moura Relvas, na chamada Cooperativa dos Pedreiros, na Rua da Alegria, no Porto.

Vale bem a pena a visita, para ficar a conhecer o conceito e o apartamento, pelas exposições, pela conversa, pelas vistas - durante a tarde em dias da semana ou ao Sábado, em dia de eventos especiais, como é o caso deste dia 14. Aproveitem!

This is Galeria Oitavo [Eighth Gallery], located since January 2017 in the apartment of the co-founders, Rita Vila-Chã Martins and Francisco Moura Relvas, in the so-called Cooperativa dos Pedreiros, in Rua da Alegria, in Porto.

E foram assim os eventos de Sábado passado!

No Tincal lab, o Open Day contou com a presença da Áurea Praga, curadora da exposição que inaugurou: Jewellery Meets Illustration, uma mostra de alguns dos trabalhos que integraram a exposição apresentada originalmente na Ó Galeria em Maio de 2015.

Agora continuam a poder visitar a exposição aqui no atelier, de Segunda a Sexta, entre as 10h e as 19h, até dia 9 de Novembro.

Em Braga, a grande festa de inauguração da iD Concept Store, brilhou com a presença de muitos visitantes, incluindo muitas das autoras que aceitaram o convite de participar na exposição Joalharia na Casa Rolão.

Enquanto participante e curadora fiquei orgulhosa com o fantástico trabalho de todas as joalheiras e contente por ter sido tão bem recebida neste belíssimo espaço! Um muito obrigada e parabéns a todos!

And Saturday was like this!

At Tincal lab, the Open Day had the presence of Áurea Praga, curator of the exhibition that opened: Jewellery Meets Illustration, a selection of some of the works presented originally at Ó Galeria in May 2015.

Now you can still visit the exhibition here at the atelier from Monday to Friday, between 10am and 7pm, until November 9th.

In Braga, the great celebration of the opening of iD Concept Store was highlighted with the presence of many people, including most of the authors who accepted the invitation to take part in the exhibition Joalharia na Casa Rolão (Jewelry at Rolão House).

As participant and curator I was really proud of the fantastic work by all of the jewelers and happy to have been so well received in this beautiful space! A big thank you and congratulations to all!

E este vai ser um fim-de-semana em cheio: com a inauguração da mostra Jewellery Meets Illustration no Open Day de Setembro no Tincal lab e a exposição Joalharia na Casa Rolão que irá ajudar a celebrar a abertura da loja iD Concept em Braga.

A exposição Jewellery Meets Illustration fez originalmente parte do programa do 10º aniversário da PIN e inaugurou na Ó! Galeria no Porto a 9 de Maio de 2015. Foram convidados 10 joalheiros e 10 ilustradores a integrar este projecto experimental e agora, no Tincal lab será possível ver uma selecção dos trabalhos apresentados - mais informação sobre o evento aqui.

A exposição Joalharia na Casa Rolão surgiu de um convite que me foi lançado pelos responsáveis do espaço iD Concept, para a curadoria de uma exposição colectiva inspirada nos detalhes deste belo edifício barroco - e o resultado é fantástico! 10 joalheiros portugueses terão peças exclusivas em exposição e disponíveis para venda já a partir do próximo Sábado - mais informação sobre o evento aqui.

Enquanto participante nas duas exposições, eu estarei dividida entre Porto e Braga para tentar acompanhar os melhores momentos destes dois eventos, estão todos convidados a juntar-se a nós!

And this will be a full weekend: with the opening of the show Jewellery Meets Illustration at Tincal lab's Open Day of September and the exhibition Joalharia na Casa Rolão [Jewelry in Rolão House] that will celebrate the opening of iD Concept store in Braga.

The exhibition Jewellery Meets Illustration was originally part of the 10th anniversary of PIN and was launched at Ó! Galeria in Porto on 9th May 2015. 10 jewelers and 10 illustrators were invited to integrate this experimental project and now, at Tincal lab, you'll be able to see a selection of the works presented at the time - more information about the event here.

The exhibition Joalharia na Casa Rolão was born from an invitation I received from the owners of iD Concept store to curate a collective exhibition inspired by the details of this beautiful Baroque building - and the result is amazing! 10 Portuguese jewelers will have there exclusive pieces on display and available for sale from next Saturday on - more information about the event here.

As I take part in both exhibitions, I'll be divided between Porto and Braga and try to enjoy the best moments of these two events, you're invited to join us!

And the opening of the exhibition Jewellery Meets Illustration last Saturday at Ó! Galeria, in Porto, was like this.

Lots of visitors, some reunions and a great result, with jewels and illustrations in dialogue with each other! My jewels for example, had the pleasure of chatting with Maria Herreros illustrations (see photos 4 and 5).

Jewellery Meets Illustration é um projecto integrado na celebração dos 10 anos da PIN, que conta com a colaboração da Ó! Galeria, no Porto, e a curadoria de Aurea Praga e Katja Tschimmel.

O contexto e originalidade do projecto já faria, por si só, com que o convite fosse irrecusável, mas tendo sido feito pela Aurea, uma das amigas e artistas (ela própria joalheira e ilustradora) que mais admiro, ao inevitável "sim" juntou-se a honra de ser seleccionada a participar e o entusiasmo de ver o meu trabalho entre tantos outros autores que já acompanho e admiro há muito tempo.

10 joalheiros e 10 ilustradores foram convidados a participar e, depois de combinados em pares, a criar uma peça original da sua autoria, inspirada no trabalho do outro.

O desafio consiste em relacionar duas artes que aparentemente não têm muito em comum (ou têm?), mas que afinal lidam com fontes de inspiração, imaginários e técnicas que podem encontrar-se e fazer parte do mesmo universo de uma forma tão surpreendente quanto harmoniosa.

Eu estou muito curiosa para ver o resultado!

Jewellery Meets Illustration is a project integrated in the celebration of 10 years of contemporary jewelry association PIN, with the support of Ó! Galeria (a lovely illustration gallery in Porto), curated by Aurea Praga (aka Golden Plague) and Katja Tschimmel.

The context and originality of the project by itself, already turned the invitation into irresistible, but having been made by Aurea, one of the friends and artists (a jeweler and illustrator herself) I admire the most, to the inevitable "yes" I added the honor of being selected to participate and the enthusiasm of seeing my work among so many other artists I already follow and admire for a long time.

10 jewelers and 10 illustrators were invited to participate and after being combined in pairs, asked to create an original piece, inspired by the work of the other.

The challenge is to relate two arts that apparently don't have that much in common (or do they?) but that ultimately deal with sources of inspiration, imaginary and techniques that can meet and be part of the same universe in a surprising and harmonious way.

I'm very curious to see the result!

A ilustração tem vindo gradualmente a assumir-se como uma nova forma de arte.

Tradicionalmente dir-se-ia que a ilustração é uma representação que, independentemente do suporte e técnica utilizada, estaria associada a um texto - de um livro, uma revista ou jornal, um cartaz - e serviria precisamente para ilustrar esse mesmo texto ou um suporte específico, transmitindo através de uma imagem não-fotográfica uma mensagem. Pode ser mais ou menos explícita, realista ou pessoal, mas à partida a ilustração, por definição, não vive por si mesma, isolada do seu contexto.

Mas este conceito está a mudar. Actualmente é comum chamar-se de ilustração uma expressão artística em forma de desenho ou pintura que se afasta do circuito tradicional da obra de arte. As obras de arte são caras, únicas, para serem expostas em Galerias - as ilustrações são geralmente mais acessíveis, são muitas vezes reproduzidas, quer em formato papel, quer transpostas para uma série de outros suportes como objectos ou acessórios (eu própria faço isso com o meu trabalho).

A ilustração agora tem valor por si própria - e não precisa sequer de estar associada a um texto ou contexto específico. Se esta definição está correcta ou  faz sentido não sei... mas também não me preocupa muito, porque a verdade é que estes trabalhos carregam mensagens e têm valor artístico em si mesmos - e talvez seja correcto afirmar que em grande parte se afastam um pouco da visão tradicional que temos da arte.

Existem até Galerias de Arte que expõem apenas ilustração - e em todo o seu esplendor, como a Ó Galeria, no Porto. Para além de permitirem levar este tipo de arte a mais gente, estes espaços contemporâneos mostram a arte como algo mais informal e acessível do que as galerias tradicionais - permitindo também divulgar e promover o trabalho de novos artistas que muitas vezes de outro modo manteriam os seus trabalhos na gaveta.

No Sábado passado fomos até ao Fórum da Maia visitar a 3ª edição da Uivo, uma mostra de ilustração de trabalhos seleccionados de alguns dos nomes mais interessantes e promissores da área. E assim a ilustração chega também a novos espaços e novos públicos. Vale a pena visitar, até 30 de Março.

Illustration has gradually been assumed as a new art form.

Traditionally it would be a representation that, regardless of the medium and technique used, would be associated with a text - a book, a magazine or newspaper, a poster - and served precisely to illustrate the same text or specific object, by transmitting a message with a non-photographic image. May be more or less explicit, realistic or personal, but illustration, by definition , isn't supposed to live for itself, isolated from its context.

But this concept is changing. Currently it is common to call illustration an artistic expression in the form of drawing or painting that moves away from the traditional circuit of the artwork. Artworks are expensive, unique, only to be exhibited in galleries - illustrations are generally more affordable, are often reproduced either in paper or transposed into a number of other media as objects or accessories (I actually do this with my own work as well).

Illustration has now a value in itself - it doesn't even need to be associated with a specific text or context. If this definition is correct or makes sense I wouldn't know... but it doesn't worry me too much, because the truth is that these works carry messages and have artistic value in themselves - and perhaps it's correct to say they slightly deviate from the traditional view that we have of art.

There are even Galleries exhibiting illustration only - and in all its splendor, like Ó Galeria in Porto. These contemporary spaces also allow to take this art to more people, showing art as something more informal and accessible than traditional galleries - allowing also to promote the work of young artists who often otherwise would keep their works in the drawer.

Last Saturday we went to Fórum da Maia to visit the 3rd edition of Uivo, an exhibition of selected illustrations by some of the most interesting and promising names in the field. And so illustration also reaches new spaces and new audiences. It's worth a visit, until March 30th.

As Histórias do Tio Remo

E a propósito da foto que tirei ontem no instagram para o desafio #desculpashámuitas, decidi investigar um pouco mais sobre as ilustrações de António Quadros na versão portuguesa do livro de 1959: As Histórias do Tio Remo.

O tema do desafio para a fotografia de dia 19 era a minha infância e quando me pus a pensar nisso reparei que poucas coisas tenho aqui em casa que me façam regressar a esse tempo... quase tudo ficou em casa dos meus pais: desenhos que fazia, livros que lia, fotografias que me eram tiradas - tudo que agora recordo apenas de memória, porque quando nos mudamos para a nossa casa deixamos para trás uma série de recordações que achamos não caberem no presente - em parte por falta de espaço, em parte porque no íntimo estamos convencidos que a casa dos pais é aquele refúgio que será sempre nosso e onde podemos regressar sempre que quisermos (eu estou).

Dou por mim a encontrar na estante As Histórias do Tio Remo e sou logo reportada para um tempo em que as fábulas faziam parte do dia-a-dia, em que as palavras tinham letras grandes e eram acompanhadas por ilustrações a que, muito provavelmente, só muitos anos depois conseguimos dar o verdadeiro valor.

O livro tem um cheiro estranho a tempo, está gasto e empenado, as folhas enrugadas, a capa já sem cor nos cantos, uma assinatura tosca está escrita na lombada - e no entanto este é o único livro da minha infância que trouxe comigo. Porquê?

Lembro-me perfeitamente dos meus pais mo oferecerem numa Feira do Livro, quando mesmo só conseguindo apreciar as cores das capas já gostava de me perder entre eles. Lembro-me de achar as histórias algo sinistras, entre lições de moral que implicavam partidas e maldades entre animais improváveis (como Cágados e Sarigueias), ora tolos, ora ladinos. Lembro-me do vocabulário antiquado e sobretudo das ilustrações que sempre me fascinaram, mas que só agora consigo realmente apreciar.

Mais tarde, comecei a guardar entre as suas páginas uma série de folhas e flores prensadas, para secar - algumas estão aqui há anos, mais belas do que nunca. E é sobretudo por isso que o livro continua comigo - usá-lo (e em parte danificá-lo) para abrigar este herbário desordenado foi a forma que encontrei de nunca me desfazer dele. As suas ilustrações são preciosas - e neste momento a sua história (para além das histórias que conta) também.

As Histórias do Tio Remo é um livro de 1959, publicado em Portugal pela Livraria Civilização. A compilação original  de Joel Chandler Harris remonta a 1881.

And concerning the photo I took yesterday on instagram for the challenge #desculpashámuitas, I decided to investigate a little more about the illustrations by António Quadros in the Portuguese version of the book of 1959: Uncle Remus Tales.

The theme for the photo challenge for day 19 was my childhood and when I started out thinking about it I noticed I have only a few things here at home that make me return to that time... almost everything is still in my parents' house: drawings I made, books I read, photographs that were taken - all of this I remember now only by memory, because when we move to our home we usually leave behind a lot of souvenirs that we think don't fit the present - partly for lack of space, partly because at heart we are convinced that our parents' home will always be a refuge we can turn to whenever we want (I am ).

I look around and find on the shelf the old Uncle Remus and I'm immediately reported to a time when fables were present on a daily basis, told in words with large letters and accompanied by illustrations that only many years later we can truly value.

The book has a strange smell of time, is worn and bent, shows wrinkled pages, a discolored cover in the corners and a rough signature on the spine - and yet this is the only book from my childhood that I brought me. Why?

I distinctly remember my parents offering me this book at the annual Book Fair, at a time when I only managed to enjoy the colors of the covers, but already loved to get lost among them. I remember to find the stories somewhat sinister, between moral lessons that involved some wicked tricks of unlikely animals (like Snapping Turtles and Opossums), sometimes silly, sometimes sharp. I remember the old fashioned vocabulary and especially the fascinating illustrations, that only now I can truly appreciate.

Later, I began keeping between its pages a series of pressed leaves and flowers to dry - some have been here for years, more beautiful than ever . And it's especially for this reason that the book is still with me - using it (and partly damaging it) to house this disordered herbarium was the way I found to never get rid of the book. Its illustrations are precious - and by this time its history (in addition to the stories it tells) too.

As Histórias do Tio Remo [Uncle Remus Tales] is a 1959 book, published in Portugal by Livraria Civilização. The original compilation by Joel Chandler Harris goes back to 1881.

This new year of 2014 will bring some changes to {the interview seres}. I want to dedicate more time to my work in the workshop, so the publication of the interviews will be slower and less regular. Nevertheless I don't want to stop featuring new artists, when they cross my path and caught my eye... so keep following!

1. who is Hsiao-Chi Chang? 

I am an illustrator who was born and raised in Taiwan. Currently, I live in San Francisco.

2. have you become what you wanted to be when you grew up?

When I was a kid, my dream was becoming an astronomer. Now, I am an artist and still love to watch the stars at night.

3. what inspires you to create?

The desire to play and express my emotions.

I love pencils. I also work with acrylic, gouache, watercolor, mixed media and digital applications.  It is fun for me to experiment with media all the time.

5. the favorite corner of your workspace.

I can work from anywhere as long as I can have a big table and a cup of half sweet black tea latte.

6. a day at work.

I don’t really have a set routine. However, I usually wake up early and I will make sure I have at least 30 minutes every day to doodle, make experimental work, people watch, etc.

7. a business tip.

Be confident. I am still working on it.

8. an advice to your younger you.

Live lighter and smile.

9. a plan to the future.

Create one thing I like everyday.

And it's again that time of the year!

At CRU, in Porto, today begins another edition of Bazar dos Doze (Bazar of the Twelve): 12 days when 12 artists sell their creations at the maximum price of 12€. 1. who is Joanna Concejo?

I was born in Poland 42 years ago, today I live and work in France. I’m an illustrator, mostly working for children books, but also work for newspapers and design projects such as ceramic or textiles.

2. have you become what you wanted to be when you grew up?

I may say that I’m in the path that I choose and also that I would like to keep going in that direction.

3. what inspires you to create?

Inspiration could come form the most irrelevant event or a moment that I’m not looking for, then just happens, sometimes could be something I heard or a word I read or a scene at the metro. Sometimes I get trapped in my daily life then it’s hard to find inspirations, but I let the moment go and they finally come up.

4. your artistic media of choice.

I draw, then my medium is always pencils and paper, sometimes colored pencils, but I also work with collage, which is again paper and clue.

I like to used papers that they had been used before or they have little marks or stains, is like paper which had life before I use them. When I work with design for ceramic I draw with an special pencil and then I draw directly to the object I work on it.

5. the favorite corner of your workspace.

I don’t have a special place to work, I can work almost everywhere I can find a table and a chair and then I like to work in a calm environment.

6. a day at work.

I don’t have a special routine, but I always try to put me to work in the morning and then take advantage of using the time at the most. I can’t work with artificial light then I have to use time and light as best as I can.

But at night I play with pencils developing ideas and drawings for the next day.

7. a business tip.

I think the lack of business ideas is my weak point and maybe I should work on it.

8. an advice to your younger you.

Always do what you thing is right and what you love, sometimes the path seems hard but it always gets better.

9. a plan to the future.

I have no plans for the future, I have an idea of what I’m going to do in the next couples of years, but you never know, things could always change. I would like to have a bigger place in order to be able to work in another scale, and also work in installations and sculpture, I would like to have a garden and make the living only from my work as an illustrator.

I don’t know what everyone else should read but as far as for me I lately enjoyed reading Andrzej Stasiuk In the road to Babadag or Taksim.

Now I may say, Sigur Rós.

14. a city to fall in love with.
I’m not a city person but I may admit that I have a great love for Varsovia.

I love home made food, like my grandmother used to cook in the country side back in Poland, stuffed meet, potatoes from Poland, and then I love tea and beer sometimes.

16. a guilty pleasure.
I love beignets from Poland and those which have a rose marmalade inside with a lot of sugar covering...

1. who is Ricardo Rodrigues?

 A designer, a illustrator, a doll maker, a dreamer...

2. have you become what you wanted to be when you grew up?

 I did many of the things I dreamed of but still some to accomplish.

3. what inspires you to create?

 I must say, almost everything. I am a very visual person. I enjoy seeing beautiful things.

4. your artistic media of choice.

I don’t have just one. I don’t like doing the same thing over and over. I love switching materials. I love my bic black pen for drawing, fabrics and accessories for making dolls, acrylic paint for painting wood, and so on…

5. the favorite corner of your workspace.

I am starting to build a work space now, because I never had one. I always worked at home, on the sofa or the kitchen table and that’s all right for me.

6. a day at work.

I work as a designer for an environmental company, so it´s like a 9 to 6 day job. At the end of the day and on weekends I “work for me” as I like to say. On Saturdays I open my little store on the afternoon which is called BE LIGHT – Ideias Luminosas and where I show and sell some of mine and other artists work.

7. a business tip.

Work, work, work and have fun with it.

8. an advice to your younger you.

Stop trying to control everything.

9. a plan to the future.

Just dedicate myself to the kind of work I like to do.

I don’t have one in particular. I am very eclectic, so I am influenced by many visions.

At least one of Saramago’s books and one of Fernando Pessoa’s Poems.

So many… Recently, Life of Pi.

O Estrangeiro from Caetano Veloso.

It´s a strange music that fascinates me and I never get tired of it.

14. a city to fall in love with.

Lisbon and so many others. Cities Fascinate me.

15. a favorite food and drink.

Traditional Portuguese food, sushi, Italian food, Indian food… I love food.

The drink depends on the food. I love natural fruit juice.

16. a guilty pleasure.

Sweats! Love them but shouldn´t eat so many.
