Quem me acompanha aqui neste cantinho virtual poderá não ter essa percepção, mas quem convive comigo mais de perto sabe que este foi um ano de grandes mudanças - daquelas que, embora afectem toda uma vida, acabaram por desenrolar-se com a maior naturalidade possível, minimizando estragos e possíveis rancores, permitindo guardar as boas recordações num lugar seguro.

As mudanças obrigam-nos sempre a alguma ginástica e talvez por isso, ou porque com a idade o tempo se torna cada vez mais relativo, parece que o ano passou a voar! Ainda ontem reflectia sobre o fim de 2016 e agora cá estamos, a dizer olá a 2018.

Em 2017 visitei o frio de Chaves e o calor das praias do Parque Natural da Arrábida. Provei o vinho do Douro na Quinta do Vallado.

Li alguns livros, muitos de autores portugueses; vi o Jay-Jay ao vivo, admirei a obra de Alberto Carneiro e da Bienal de Cerveira, pela primeira vez; entrei também pela primeira vez em alguns edifícios da minha cidade, graças à Open House; descobri séries sobre psicopatas.

No Tincal lab houve workshops e um novo Desafio (ainda podem visitar a exposição, não percam!).

Celebrei os 2 anos do atelier no dia do meu próprio aniversário.

Estive na Porto Jóia e falei sobre mim - em vídeo, ao vivo e por escrito.

Viajei até terras do Drácula, onde participei numa fantástica feira de joalharia internacional em Bucareste: a Autor. Pelo caminho ainda parei em Milão.

Lancei as colecções Tubular e Orla, levei a joalharia Ana Pina para novos pontos de venda.

Mas com um fim - de um ano, de um ciclo - vem também um novo começo, com todas as maravilhosas descobertas e desafios que os novos começos nos oferecem. Se nos limitássemos ao conforto do que temos, tantas vezes difícil de distinguir da acomodação, talvez não fizéssemos desta a mais entusiasmante das viagens. Talvez seja esse o meu maior desejo para 2018: não me acomodar, querer deitar-me cansada depois de um dia cheio, insistir em fazer coisas pela primeira vez, continuar com vontade de fazer planos para o dia seguinte - para o ano seguinte, para o projecto seguinte, para a viagem seguinte (agora contigo).

Those who follow me here in this virtual corner may not have this perception, but those who live with me more closely know that this was a year of great changes - those that, although affecting a whole life, eventually unfolded as naturally as possible, minimizing damage and possible grudges, allowing to keep the good memories in a safe place.

Changes always force us to some gymnastics and maybe because of that, or because with age time becomes more and more relative, it seems that the year flew! Still yesterday I reflected on the end of 2016 and now here we are, waiving hello to 2018.

In 2017 I visited cold Chaves and the hot beaches of Parque Natural da Arrábida. I tasted the wine of Douro at Quinta do Vallado.

I read some books, many by Portuguese authors; saw Jay-Jay live, admired the art by Alberto Carneiro and Bienal de Cerveira, for the first time; visited, also for the first time, some buildings of my city, thanks to Open House; I discovered new series about psychopaths.

At Tincal lab we had workshops and a new Challenge (you can still visit the exhibition, don't miss it!).

I celebrated the second anniversary of the atelier on the day of my own birthday.

I was at Porto Jóia and talked about me - on vídeo, live and in writing.

I traveled to Romania, where I took part in an amazing international jewelry fair in Bucharest: Autor. On the way I even made a stop in Milan.

I launched the collections Tubular and Orla, took Ana Pina jewelry to new stockists.

But with an end - of a year, of a cycle - comes a new beginning, with all the wonderful discoveries and challenges that new beginnings can offer us. If we confine ourselves to the comfort of what we have, so often difficult to distinguish from conformation, we might not make this the most exciting of journeys. Maybe this is my biggest wish for 2018: to not settle down, to want to lie down tired after a full day, insist on doing things for the first time, continue to feel like making plans for the next day - for the next year, for the next project, for the next trip (now with you).

Quinta do Vallado

Começo a semana com um regresso à Quinta do Vallado, para uma experiência que irá certamente agradar aos amantes do vinho, da arquitectura, ou, melhor ainda, se forem como eu: das duas coisas!

A Quinta do Vallado, construída em 1716, é uma das Quintas mais antigas do Vale do Douro e mantém-se ainda hoje na família da famosa Ferreirinha. Situa-se nas margens do Rio Corgo, um afluente do Rio Douro, muito perto do Peso da Régua.

A ampliação do Hotel e Adega da Quinta do Vallado, desenvolvida entre 2007 e 2010 pelo arquitecto Francisco Vieira de Campos (Menos é Mais), demonstra como uma intervenção atenta ao detalhe e às características particulares do terreno consegue responder eficaz e harmoniosamente a necessidades logísticas e de integração na paisagem. Na adega, as fases de produção do vinho sucedem-se por gravidade, desde as vinhas em socalcos no topo até à cave de barricas, que as alberga como uma grande e gulosa barriga de betão. O volume ora se encosta ora se suspende, afirma-se com arestas serpenteantes, mas faz parte do terreno com a mesma naturalidade das linhas horizontais que desenham as curvas de nível, cuidada integração acentuada pelo uso do xisto, pedra característica da região e tão expressiva em texturas e cores.

Não percam a oportunidade de relaxar enquanto admiram cada detalhe e, claro, de provar o vinho!

I start the week with a return to Quinta do Vallado, for an experience that will surely please wine lovers, architecture lovers, or, better still, if you're like me: lovers of both!

Quinta do Vallado, built in 1716, is one of the oldest estates in the Douro Valley and still remains in the family of the famous Ferreirinha. It's located on the banks of River Corgo, a tributary of Douro River, very close to Peso da Régua.

The extension of the Hotel and Winery of Quinta do Vallado, developed between 2007 and 2010 by architect Francisco Vieira de Campos (Menos é Mais), demonstrates how an intervention careful to detail and the particular characteristics of the land is able to answer effectively to logistical needs and to the harmonious integration in the landscape. In the winery, the stages of wine production succeed by gravity, from the vineyards in terraces on top to the cellar, that houses the wine barrels as a large and greedy belly of concrete. The volume either leans or hangs, but is part of the terrain with the same naturalness of the horizontal lines that draw contour lines, integration that is accentuated by the use of shale, a characteristic stone of the region that is so expressive in textures and colors.

Don't miss the opportunity to relax while admiring every detail and, of course, to taste the wine!

A nova Colecção Tubular combina fios e tubos de secção redonda de forma subtil, dando origem a peças simultaneamente minimalistas e capazes de se destacar, que celebram linhas geométricas puras e as suas múltiplas possibilidades de combinação.

Last Saturday my Tubular Collection was presented at scar-id store, in Porto!

The amazing storefront of this perfect store for lovers of fashion and design at Rua do Rosário was occupied by the rectlinear geometric pieces of the latest Ana Pina jewelry collection.

The new Tubular Collection combines round wires and tubes in a subtle way, creating both minimalist and statement pieces that aim to celebrate pure geometric lines and its multiple possibilities of combination.

Desde que "optei" pela vida de freelancer que ganhei uma maior consciência de que nada pode ser dado como adquirido. Por muito que some sucessos, cada dia parece um recomeço e não são raros os momentos de pânico em que dou por mim a pensar que é uma loucura não escolher o caminho mais "fácil". Mas se calhar não existe um caminho fácil - ou talvez simplesmente sermos quem somos não seja uma escolha.

Uma vez li uma entrevista em que o João Tordo dizia que sempre tinha tido dificuldade em lidar com situações de exposição pública e a forma de aprender a ultrapassar isso não passou pelo hábito, mas sim pela tomada de consciência de que a alternativa não era uma opção. Parar não é opção, recusar ou fugir não é opção, conformar-se não é opção - e é esta forma de colocar as coisas em perspectiva que me faz encarar um novo dia com mais calma e a certeza de que ninguém pode vivê-lo por mim. E o que é o pior que pode acontecer? Na maior parte das vezes, se respondermos conscientemente a esta pergunta, vemos que no fundo não precisamos de ter tanto medo quanto julgávamos.

Não sei até que ponto escolhemos aquilo que nos acontece na vida. Não acredito que é o destino que escolhe por nós, mas há muitas decisões que nos sentimos obrigados a tomar mesmo sem querermos, seja pela circunstância, por influência da nossa educação, de pressões exteriores e interiores, por medo. Há demasiadas coisas que não conseguimos controlar - seja uma guerra ou um terramoto - e coisas que temos apenas a ilusão de que conseguimos controlar - a viagem que planeamos ao pormenor ou a aparente segurança do emprego de sempre - por isso resta-nos fazer um esforço para não deixarmos que seja a "vida" a decidir por nós todo o resto.

Esta composição de #2016bestnine que reúne as "melhores" 9 fotos do meu instagram (não, são só aquelas com mais likes) é, como todas as generalizações, talvez um pouco superficial e enganadora, mas não deixa de reunir algumas das coisas de que mais gosto e que espero continuar a multiplicar ao longo do ano que agora começou: viver a minha cidade e descobrir outras, a admiração pela arquitectura, pela arte e pela paisagem, ver o meu trabalho crescer e partilhar essas alegrias com aqueles que são especiais na minha vida - Frida incluída.

Since I "opted" for freelance life I've gained a greater awareness that nothing can be taken for granted. For as many successes I may have, every day seems like a fresh start, and the moments of panic in which I think it's crazy not to choose the "easy" way are not uncommon. But maybe there is no easy way - or maybe just being who we are is not a choice.

Once I read an interview in which João Tordo said that he always had difficulty dealing with situations of public exposure and a way of learning to overcome it was not a matter of habit but an awareness that an alternative was not an option. To stop is not an option, to refuse or to escape is not an option, to conform is not an option - and it's this way of putting things into perspective that makes me face a new day with more calm and the certainty that no one can live it for me. And what is the worst that can happen? Most of the time, if you answer this question honestly, you see that there's no need to be as afraid as you thought.

I don't know if we really choose what happens to us in life. I don't believe that it's destiny that chooses for us, but there are many decisions that we feel obliged to take even if we don't want to, through the influence of context, our education, external and internal pressures, or fear. There are too many things that we can't control - a war or an earthquake - and things that we only think we can control - a trip planned to the detail or the apparent security of a job of a lifetime - so maybe we should try to make an effort to decide the rest for ourselves.

This image of #2016bestnine that brings together the "best" 9 photos of my instagram (well, not the best, but the ones with more likes), like every generalization, may be a bit shallow and misleading, but it does not fail to gather some of the things that I most enjoy and that I hope to continue to multiply throughout the new year that have just began: living my city and discovering others, the admiration for architecture, art and landscape, seeing my work grow and sharing these joys with those who are special in my life - Frida included.

E depois de todo o trabalho de um ano acumulado, de todos os possíveis sonhos cumpridos, de todos os presentes comprados... chegou aquela altura do ano de desejar a todos um muito feliz Natal!

A próxima semana será de transição: o trabalho no atelier fará uma pausa, mas na cabeça já se multiplicam ideias para novos projectos em 2017. Estarei de volta ao Tincal lab em horário normal no dia 2 de Janeiro.

Até lá, é altura de comer pão-de-ló, fazer aletria e rabanadas, ouvir músicas com sininhos, imaginar neve a cair do outro lado da janela, partilhar a mesa cheia com aqueles que nos são mais próximos, e (que remédio) dedicar uma mensagem de saudade àqueles que só não estão mais próximos porque a distância física ou o passar do tempo o determinam.

Festas felizes e boas entradas em 2017!

And after all the accumulated work of a year, of all the possible dreams fulfilled, of all the gifts bought... it's that time of year to wish everyone a merry Christmas!

Next week will be transitional: the atelier will close for a break but in the head I'm already multiplying ideas for new projects in 2017. I'll be back to Tincal lab on January 2nd.

Until then, it's time to eat pão-de-ló, make aletria and rabanadas, listen to songs with bells, imagine snow falling on the other side of the window, share the table with the ones close to our hearts and to dedicate a message of longing to those who can't be closer either because physical distance or the passage of time determines it.

Amanhã é dia de Open Day no Tincal lab!

Estão todos convidados a ver peças de Ana Pina e da convidada Joana Santos ao vivo. Em dia de inaugurações simultâneas em Miguel Bombarda não há desculpas para não dar um passeio pelo Quarteirão das Artes, o atelier fica bem pertinho.

Sobre a convidada:

Joana Santos nasce em Maio de 1986 na cidade do Porto, Portugal.
Enquanto arquitecta, sentia a falta do trabalho manual, mais intimista e do desafio sem limites no que toca à criação.
Olhou sempre para a joalharia com grande curiosidade e admiração e foi então em 2013 que iniciou a sua jornada de descoberta e aprendizagem.
Não deixando de transportar todo o conhecimento e experiencia para as suas criações, estas revelam uma forte influência da geometria, através do uso de linhas rectas, o jogo de planos e de volumetrias simples.

Visitem-nos das 15h às 20h, na Rua de Cedofeita, 27, 2º frente, mesmo ao lado da Praça Carlos Alberto. Até amanhã!

About the guest:
Joana Santos was born in 1986 in the city of Porto, Portugal.
Being an architect, she was missing the manual work that is more intimate and she was looking forward to a more challenging creation.
Curious about jewelry from a long time, it was in 2013 that she finally begun the learning and discovery path.
Joana’s work reveals the knowledge and experience from the past with the influence of geometry, by the use of straight lines, plans and simple volumes.

Munich // Dachau Concentration Camp

Durante a viagem a Munique, um dos dias foi reservado a uma visita a Dachau - o memorial do campo de concentração.

Dachau foi o primeiro campo de concentração nazi, montado a 22 de Março de 1933 e finalmente libertado a 29 de Abril de 1945, pelos Aliados.

Serviu de modelo aos campos futuros e, embora não se trate de um campo de extermínio, foi mais um dos imensos palcos de morte e tortura nazi.

Por muitos documentários que se vejam e muita informação que se leia, nada nos fará compreender ou imaginar o que seria ter vivido uma terrível experiência como esta. Nem a visita física a um destes espaços parcialmente reconstruídos, por pesado e incómodo que seja o ambiente, nos torna realmente mais próximos da realidade. Este foi um dia cinzento e de chuva, dir-se-ia que ideal para uma visita como esta, mas o nosso desconforto parecia fazer-nos sentir ainda mais pequenos, porque pouco se poderá comparar ao horror de saber que o que aqui se passou foi verdade.

E porquê?

Às vezes penso que a Humanidade não aprenderá nunca.

During the trip to Munich, one of the days was reserved for a visit to Dachau - the concentration camp memorial.

Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp, mounted on March 22nd of 1933 and finally liberated on April 29th of 1945 by the Allies.It served as a model for future camps, and even though is not a death camp, it was one more of the many stages of Nazi's death and torture.

We can watch documentaries and read lots of information about it, but nothing will make us understand or imagine what would have been to live such a terrible experience. Neither the  physical visit to one of these partially reconstructed spaces, as heavy and cumbersome the environment may be, makes us really closer to reality. This was a gray and rainy day, one would say ideal for a visit like this, but our discomfort only seemed to make us feel even smaller, because little can compare to the horror of knowing what went on here was true.

And why?
Sometimes I think Humanity will never learn.

Como eu dizia, a viagem a Munique foi muito mais do que a Munich Jewellery Week.

Também foi feita de passeios de muitos kms pela cidade, visitas a museus incríveis como a Lenbachhaus, a Neue Pinakothek ou a Pinakothek Der Moderne, espaços emblemáticos como a Marienplatz com a Neues Rathaus, a imensidão do Englischer Garten, a arquitectura moderna do Olympia Park e do BMW Welt (já juntei um Mini vermelho e branco à wishlist) e,claro, a cerveja! - que aconselho a provar em várias das cervejaria espalhadas pelo centro, mas sem perder uma visita à famosa Hofbrauhaus.

E já que tínhamos que passar frio, pelo menos pudemos fazê-lo com neve! Nunca tinha estado numa cidade com neve e a magia compensa de longe o frio e o medo de poder escorregar a qualquer momento!

As I said, the trip to Munich was much more than the Munich Jewellery Week.

It was also made of walks of many miles through the city, visiting incredible museums like the Lenbachhaus, the Neue Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne, emblematic spaces like Marienplatz with the Neues Rathaus, the immensity of the English Garden, the modern architecture of Olympia Park and the BMW Welt (already added a red and white Mini to my wishlist) and of course, beer! - I advise you to taste it in the many breweries around the center, but without missing a visit to the famous Hofbrauhaus.

And since we had to go cold, at least we could do it with snow! I'd never been in a city with snow and the magic compensates by far the cold and the fear of slipping at any time!

A viagem a Munique foi muito mais do que a Munich Jewellery Week, mas este foi sem dúvida o grande pretexto para esta visita e aquilo que tornou os dias na cidade ainda mais ricos.

Embora o destaque vá para as importantes exposições Schmuck e Talente, integradas no evento Handwerk & Design, toda a programação paralela espalhada pela cidade contribui para transformar estes dias numa verdadeira caça ao tesouro.

De mapa na mão, as galerias vão-se multiplicando, entre espaços mais convencionais até estúdios e oficinas de artistas e outros menos habituados a receber este tipo de eventos, como salas vazias em gabinetes de design, prateleiras em lojas de mobiliário, pequenas lojas pop-up, montras, caravanas... artistas de várias nacionalidades expõem individualmente ou em grupo, mostrando o que de melhor se faz hoje em dia na área da joalharia artística.

Regressei com um misto de boom de inspiração e frustração... dividida entre toda a maravilha que pude ficar a conhecer e a noção de que o nosso mercado português é ainda muito limitado para a receber. Fica a abertura de horizontes, a vontade de criar mais e melhor, experimentar materiais, formas e conceitos...

Munique valerá certamente a pena visitar em qualquer altura do ano, mas se gostam de joalharia, não percam a oportunidade de o fazer durante esta incrível semana!

The trip to Munich was much more than Munich Jewellery Week, but this was undoubtedly the great pretext for this visit and what made the days in the city even richer.

Although the focus is primarily on the important exhibitions Schmuck and Talente integrated in Handwerk & Design event, all parallel programming scattered around the city helps to make these days a real treasure hunt.

Map in hand, galleries multiply, from more conventional spaces to studios and workshops of artists and other less accustomed to receiving this kind of events, such as empty rooms in design offices, shelves in furniture stores, small pop-up stores, storefronts, caravans... artists of various nationalities display their work individually or in group, showing the best of what is done today in the area of ​​artistic jewelry.

I came back with mixed feelings, between the boom of inspiration and a bit of frustration... divided between all the wonder I could get to know and the notion that our Portuguese market is still very limited to receive it. I came with open horizons, the desire to create more and better, try new materials, shapes and concepts...

Munich certainly be worth visiting at any time of year, but if you love jewelry, don't miss the opportunity to do so during this amazing week!

Experimenta Design // Matosinhos

Em 2015 a Experimenta Design resolveu vir até ao Porto.

Depois da visita à exposição no Palácio dos Correios, Sábado foi dia de ir até Matosinhos, para a visita a outra parte desta mostra.

Desejo, Tensão, Transição - Percursos do Design Português apresenta 16 formas de abordar o design, desde o logotipo, até ao cartaz e ao objecto. Uma exposição bastante completa e interessante, sobre o que de melhor se tem feito no país - onde reconhecemos alguns elementos e descobrimos outros. Vale bem a pena a visita! Até 12 de Março.

In 2015 Experimenta Design decided to come to Porto.

After visiting the exhibition at Palácio dos Correios, Saturday was time to go to Matosinhos, to visit the other part of this show.

Desejo, Tensão, Transição - Percursos do Design Português presents 16 ways to approach design, from the logo to the poster and the object. A very complete and interesting exhibition, about the best that has been done in Portugal - where we recognize some elements and discover others. Well worth the visit! Until March 12th.
