Sangria

Thursday, 23 July 2015

PT

açucar, a gosto

EN
Summer time is perfect for moments of laziness in the sun, either on the terrace, on the beach, in the park... or just around a barbecue at home! Those that last all Sunday afternoon... last weekend I tried for the first time a homemade sangria to go with the meal - a simple recipe invented at the time and now I'm a fan!
Try it too, with these or other ingredients, just use your taste and imagination.

I gathered in a jar:
1 bottle of fresh red vinho verde (it's a Portuguese variety, but use what you will!)
25cl of fresh tonic water
1 unpeeled apple cut into slices
1 orange with peel cut into pieces
1 cinnamon stick
juniper berries, to taste
mint leaves, to taste
sugar, to taste
and, for the brave, a little chilli ;)

Good Summer to all!

atelier // reorganized

PT

EN
Now less an atelier and more of a workshop, with the area occupied by the machinery required by metalsmith occupying more and more space... in the middle of the tools and utilities there is, of course, the collection of cats and the memories of other people and places, in the form of postcards or natural elements.
How can a small space get to grow so much?... More photos here!

Orégãos. Frescos, a secar.

art wall in progress

Monday, 30 September 2013

EN
My art wall in progress is more beautiful everyday.
It began with only two or three prints. Then, I added some originals, some gifts, personalized creations... works of friends, artists I admire, some I discovered with time and others I didn't even knew about... nothing on this wall was made by me, here live the characters of others, that I like so much to admire.

I chose white frames that don't interfere with the content. The shapes and dimensions vary, the colors harmonize in their unpredictability and the artistic wall grows, without big plans.

The last resident is a beautiful drawing by Marta Nunes - a Portuguese architect and illustrator - who won a well-deserved place in the upper right corner: Camafeu [Cameo].
I was the lucky winner (yes, again!) of the giveaway Marta launched  on facebook in late spring and I'm glad to have found in this woman of strong and discreet personality a new source of daily inspiration... Thank you, Marta, for turning my artistic wall in a much more beautiful place!

São João 2013

Tuesday, 25 June 2013

EN
São João [St John] is the greatest popular festivity in the ciy of Porto!
People go out to the streets with their little plastic hammers and leeks in their hands, eat sardines, drink wine, dance and launch paper balloons in the air! At midnight a crowd watches the fireworks over the river and the bravest take the party on until dawn. You must be here to live and understand it!

Here in the neighborhood it's traddition to celebrate with a big party: the tables are placed in the large courtyard, there is popular music in the air, many snacks and good conversation in good company. As in previous years, neighbors and friends joined us for a super fun night!
Here are some pictures - there will be more next year!

This week between Christmas and New Year's Eve always seems to me like a so much needed gap in time -  even though I usually like to take these days to rest and put some things in order before a new fase in the calendar arrives, this year I've been busier that ever! In a few weeks I'll let you know why... but in the meantime, I leave you with some happy moments of the last days:

+ the blue Frida's eyes, at peace.
+ surprises in the mailbox that have made me so happy, especially in this season of festivity and sharing... thank you so much for all the sweet treats Andreia!
+ a nice Christmas table full of sweets, colors and joy!

I wish you all a prosperous 2013!

Today I present you the delicate dreamy world of cocon... this is the brand created by Masami, a Japanese living in Southern France, passionate by fashion, the sea and the children imaginary that lives within every one of us.
Cocon is a children's clothing label, but also fabric dolls and home accessories, born of a rich imagination and filled with delicious details. Get to know Masami and her work and tell me what do you think!

[This post belongs to the weekly feature {the interview series} where I publish a new interview every wednesday with inspiring artists and bloggers I admire, according to the spirit of handmade and a creative lifestyle. Become a facebook fan and don't miss a bit!]

Akatsuka Masami | cocon
Céret, Southern France

1. Let’s pretend we don’t know each other and I’ve never heard about Masami or cocon. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! I’m masami, a japanese who lives in France, mother of two children Kai and Moë.
I’m stylist, designer, creator, artist, inventor... as you want!

2. You went to fashion school in Tokyo and fine arts school in France, where you now live. How was this creative passion born and when did cocon began to take shape?
Since I was a little girl I was very passionate about art. maybe not “art” exactly at that time, but something that is born and that creates a bubble on the universe by hand anyway. I think that my world was already in it, but cocon began to take shape after my children were born, I had more confidence in myself.

3. Your creations with fabric are soft and delicate. Share with us the philosophy and concepts behind your work.
hmmm... philosophy and concept, for me it's the interpretation that can be given after my world is already present. My work is not born from that, it's very spontaneous.

4. You develop limited series of handcrafted products, from beautiful dolls to clothing and everyday accessories. Would you share your creative process with us?
Nothing simpler! Limited, because I make everything alone.
Ideas fall into my head, then idea is transformed into form, there's a selection of fabric and color,
Finally manufacturing...

5. Your wonderful characters are stylized, almost surreal! Would you consider they live among children’s imaginary or are destined to every child within us, adults?
Both. They come perhaps from children’s imaginary or even from the imaginary of adults who keep some good childhood memories - I kept in the brain and made it a mixture of child-adult.

6. I must say I love your jade plants and original mobiles! How about you: would you share a favorite and a best seller with us?
A best seller is kamomé (seagull) mobile for a while and my favorite is... all!

7. Your fashion background shows in your creations: you develop beautiful clothing collections, both to your dolls and children, as they are inspired by one another. Which one comes first? I’m curious about the upcoming collection! Can you give us a sneak peek?
Almost all starts with the ideas of clothing for children and then I adapt them to the clothing for the dolls.
Except the imaginary doll, I decide the clothing through each character.
The new collection of cocon clothing will be out late April or early May, I hope. I would love to make a boy doll clothing in this collection!

8. Through your shop your creations travel all around the world! What means do you use to promote your work?
Internet. If I waited here in this small town, nothing would ever happen. If I can work around the world, it's because humans have created this great tool!

9. Would you share with us a regular day at work?
I work on the days when children are at school from 9 am to 5 pm. Sometimes on the weekend.
I will soon have a work space, so I would really like to separate my work and private life.

10. Would you give us a glimpse of your working space? Describe it and tell us what you love most about it.
My little work space is on the corner of our living room next to the dining room. Lots of things move along the day. I try to have around the table things essential to free my mind, like pebbles, driftwood, leaves, seeds, shell, glands...
Now I’m very happy to soon have a work space just for me, just for cocon.

11. You take beautiful photographs, both from your creations and the world that surrounds you - I bet photography must be one of your other passions… Would you share your hobbies with us?
My passion for photography started when I was a student at fashion school, where I learned about the development.
More things I like... music, films, take a walk, DIY! Right now I don't have much free time.

12. You now live in the south of France, tell us what you enjoy most about it. Do you miss your roots?
Nature, it's the element I need. Here, we are lucky: we have the sea, mountains, river and lake without going too far. In fact, I left Paris to stay close to the Mediterranean Sea. I knew nobody, but no matter.
My father loves the sea, he took me there often. My need of the presence of the sea near me comes from my childhood, I think.
I miss my roots? Yes, sometimes when I’m weak and sad. But I don’t regret my choices.
Now, I'm struggling to create the roots here in France for my children.
Life is funny.

13. If you could live in any historical era of your choice, what would it be? Why?
Youth in the 60's to 80's - less individualism, incredible energy.
People were more flexible, I believe (watching my husband).

14. What advices would you give to someone who would also like to become an entrepreneur?
I don't know if it’s me who can give advice... we just must believe what we do.

15. What are your plans for the future? And your most unrealistic dreams?
Ah! Our dream is to go around the world sailing - and then my little work place in it!

Now a quick question and answer game so we can find a bit more about you and your tastes!
Tell us one:

book: illusion, Richard Bach
music: Ray lamontagne (his voice touches me deeply)
movie: Dead Man
personality/artist: my children, Kai and Moë are so creative and surprising
color: white
object: wooden item, especially driftwood

Today I bring you a multidisciplinary artist I discovered recently while wandering from blog to blog... the work of French Caroline Gomez was love at first sight! Her designs are clear, simple and refined; her photos make you dream... and the way she explores the materials is itself a hymn to the beauty of artisan manual production. Read along and tell me what you think!

Caroline Gomez
Bordeaux, France

1. Let’s pretend we don’t know each other and I’ve never heard about Caroline Gomez. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a designer and I develop my own world through collections of objects that express difference and evidence. Simple and minimal objects made of natural materials and handcrafted in France.

2. You have an academic background in design. How was this creative passion born and when did your studio began to take shape?
I have always enjoyed analyzing objects, their place, their practical sense since I was a little girl. I used to alter the things I bought and imagine those I missed...
The studio really began to take shape in the last few years, when everything appeared obvious to me and I didn’t feel so shy anymore... I made up my mind and asserted myself through self-edition.

3. In your multidisciplinary studio you combine both design and craftsmanship in subtle, minimal creations. Share with us the philosophy and concepts behind your work.
Indeed, my creations often stand at the border of design, the style of production allows it and it is what I am interested in.
My work takes root in our daily lives, my creations are meant to make them easier and lighter.
I am constantly looking for a balance so as to reduce the object to what is basic and essential.

4. You develop limited series of handcrafted products, in collaboration with artisans. Would you share your creative process with us, from the first draft to the finished product?
First, I draft my ideas on paper, they are influenced by various observations I collect at home and while travelling. These first sketches are very quick, then I make a prototype in my studio and at that point is when the object is really born.
From this stage, I stop drawing on paper and redraw the lines directly on the raw product.
Once I am satisfied with it, I leave it in the hands of an artisan so he can produce a limited series out of it.

5. You elect natural materials for your creations and you like to explore a wide variety: ceramics, wood, leather, fabrics, paper… which one challenges you the most? What’s your favorite to work with?
My favourite material is wood, I like how it feels and how it smells. It plays a major part in my collections. But porcelain was my first experience and I soon learned that it is unpredictable and often causes great challenges!
Leather, linen, paper... I am interested in all natural materials and I like to learn about them because each material has its own artisan with a real specific knowledge.

6. I must say I love the concept and design of your CONTRE collection! How about you: would you share a favorite and a best seller with us?
The CONTRE collection simply came when I realized that we put most of our furniture against the wall, so actually they do not need four legs.
I tried to alter this habit of ours by having my creations take root in the wall, spring out from it and lean against it.

7. You also develop great photographic work, mainly related to travels. Tell us about it.
Photographic reports are vital to me! They are my essential nourishment: they help me observe, construe or seize atmospheres, moments, colours, details... Travels are also becoming more and more important in my work. Each travel inspires a creation, or even a whole collection.
I choose to travel to places that have strong inspirational potential, I’ll go to a place where I feel like taking pictures.

8. Through your shop your creations travel all around the world! What means do you use to promote your work?
All kind of medias can be helpful : the press, the Internet, exhibitions, collaborations or even SLØ. It is a new magazine I created with a friend of mine and it should be out by the end of March. It all contributes to conveying my world to others.

9. Would you share with us a regular day at work?
Oh ! That would be hard. No two days are ever the same for me. I work at home and almost everywhere... all the time. My creations never leave my thoughts.

10. Would you give us a glimpse of your working space? Describe it and tell us what you love most about it.
I have a desk with all my books around me, I love books! My laptop, thousands of sketchbooks and notebooks, my colour chart, my prototypes... ¬ they all fit in a big set of shelves made of raw wood. There is another smaller space where I keep stocks and pack orders. And at my parents, in the nearby countryside, I also have a studio where I can work on prototypes.

11. Share your passions and hobbies with us.
I like baking, I’ve got a sweet tooth and cheesecake is my all-time favourite! – I also collect succulent plants, I like to have them in small pots scattered around the house. – I like books... picture books, cookbooks, Paumes Japanese books and many others – And I really enjoy going to the market and the flea market, too!

12. I already know you love to travel, but how about the place where you live? Tell us what you enjoy most about it. Would you like to live anywhere else one day?
I live in Bordeaux, in the Southwest of France. It is a beautiful city in a region planted with vines and surrounded by a wonderful country, one hour drive from the Atlantic Ocean and three hours away from Paris by train... quite an attractive location! The weather is very pleasant, I love living here !

13. If you could live in any historical era of your choice, what would it be? Why?
I’d choose the fifties because design was beautifully perfect at that period!

14. What advices would you give to someone who would also like to become an entrepreneur?
Never stop working or creating even when it is tough and you have to keep believing! My grandmother always told me : When there is a will, there is a way.

15. What are your plans for the future? And your most unrealistic dreams?
My main plan is to continue telling my story through my creations and I’d really like to start collaborations with brands or galleries. Maybe have a go at clothes and micro-architecture, why not? My dream would be to build cabins in the woods, like small hotel rooms to rent, for people who wish to retire in the heart of nature!

Now a quick question and answer game so we can find a bit more about you and your tastes!
Tell us one:

book: a travels guide
music: I Swear, Sallie Ford
movie: Paris Texas, Wim Wenders
personality/artist: Dieter Rams
color: green
object: a pencil
animal: a bear
drink: Lillet (drink from Bordeaux)
food: a cheese cake!
season of the year: Spring
travel destination: Stockholm
piece of clothing: a pair of Converse
secret: Shh… :)

Thank you for sharing your beautiful designs with us, Caroline!
